Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

Prominent historian and well-known public figure Ilber Ortayli was one of the rare figures the Turkic world has contributed to global science. The scholarly works of this great academic—dedicated to Ottoman history, as well as to major historical events and outstanding personalities of brotherly Türkiye—are substantial studies reflecting the unity of rigorous research and profound intellectual thought.

Professor Ilber Ortayli was a distinguished and eminent figure who earned high respect as one of the leading senior scholars of the Turkic world’s academic community.

The multifaceted ties of the prominent scholar Ilber Ortayli with our country have become significant events in the modern period of the history of Azerbaijani science.

In the long-standing scientific career of the venerable scholar, studies devoted to the history, culture, and literature of Azerbaijan also held a special place. At the same time, he was one of the consistent advocates of the achievements of independent Azerbaijan. Professor Ilber Ortayli’s connections with prominent Azerbaijani figures and scholars played an important role in building and strengthening new bridges of cooperation between our countries.

The passing of the eminent scholar Ilber Ortayli is a profound loss not only for Türkiye but also for the scientific community of the Turkic world. In his person, Azerbaijani scholars have lost a dear individual, a wise elder, a rare personality, a dedicated researcher, and a reliable friend.

His valuable scientific works, students, and friends will preserve the name and memory of Professor Ilber Ortayli.

We extend our deepest condolences, with great sorrow, to the academic institutions of the brotherly Republic of Türkiye, to Turkish scholars, and to his family members on the passing of Professor Ilber Ortayli.
