Notable linguist scientist chief Department of Onomastics at Institute of Art, Language and Literature of Nakhchivan Branch of ANAS, corresponding member Adil Bagirov passed away on April 21 at age of 69.

Adil Bagirov was born in 1947 in Nursu village, Shahbuz region of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Graduated from Azerbaijan State University department of Philology (current Nabu State University). Defended PhD thesis on theme “Incomplete verbs in Turkish languages (on the basis of the materials of Oghuz group of turkish languages), and doctoral thesis on “Historical-linguistic analysis of onomastic units of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (toponyms and hidronyms)”. Elected a corresponding member of ANAS in 2014.

A.Bagirov’s key research objects were study the characteristic peculiarities of incomplete verbs in Oghuz group of Turkish languages, determination its place and location, comparative study with other Turkish language groups, formation and establishment ways, development regularities, language content, meaning and position, scientific-linguistic study of structural and semantic characteristics of onomastic units in Nakhchivan territory.

In addition to scientific activity, has been engaged in pedagogical activity as well. Scientist worked as an Azerbaijani language and literature teacher at eight-year school in Shahbuz region of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in the years 1966-1973, Julfa town secondary school № 38, and Nakhchivan railway school № 39, including at the post of cabinet chief of Nakhchivan Teachers Training Institute, a school inspector of the Ministry of Public Education of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and chief department of “Azerbaijan linguistics” at the Nakhchivan Private University.

He is an author of over 140 scientific works. Mentioned ones are precious source for study history of Azerbaijan linguistcs: “Incomplete verbs in Turkish languages”, “ Nakhchivan hidronyms,” ”Onomastic units glossary of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic”, “Oykonims of Nakhchivan”, “ Onomology problems”, “Linguistic peculiarities” etc.

Celebrate scientist-linguistics and kind person Adil Bagirov’s memory will live in hearts of people who knew him.
