Prominent historian, head of the Department of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, corresponding member of ANAS Veli Huseyn oglu Aliyev is 80th on July 20.

Veli Aliyev was born in 1936 in the village of Sheki, Dashbulag. In 1959 he graduated from the history department of Azerbaijan State University, defended his PhD in 1966 and in 1984 - a doctoral thesis. In 1994 he received the title of professor and in 2003 was elected a corresponding member of ANAS.

He started his career as a researcher at the Institute of History of ANAS after A.A.Bakikhanov in 1959. Veli Aliyev since 1990 is a head of the Department of Archaeology of the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography. At the same time he is the head of the Department of General History of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University.

V.Aliyev is the author of about 300 scientific works, including 9 monographs and books on the history and archeology of Azerbaijan. His works on the archaeological research in the ancient history of Azerbaijan: "Culture colored dishes in Azerbaijan in the Bronze Age," "Ancient Nakhchivan" "Historical pages of Agsu", "Nakhchivan - the historical region of Azerbaijan", "Gamigaya", "City Gadim gala Nakhchivan "," Ancient Karabakh" and others have gained great success.

The scientist is also the principal investigator of the theme "Material culture of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic" of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography and the head of the Nakhchivan archaeological expedition. As head of the Nakhchivan archaeological expedition he carried out research work on ancient and medieval monuments in the area.

V. Aliyev also conducts research and development in the area of the ancient city of culture II-I thousand. Kura-Araks culture of the early Bronze Age culture colored utensils Middle Bronze Age Khojaly-Gadabay culture of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Southern Azerbaijan crops Bronze Age culture of rock art and early pictographic writing the evolution of the state structures of ancient tribal unions and others.

As a result of his intense and effective excavations carried out in the territory of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in 1960-1980, has been identified more than 500 new historic sites.

Scientific achievements of archeologists in the field of monuments belonging to Eneolithic, bronze, iron, Antiquity and the Middle Ages in the territory of Nakhchivan are important from the point of view of studying the archeology of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus and the Middle East.

Based on empirical data, achieved as a result of archaeological research in to Kultepe settlement near the Nakhchivan Monument Valley Late Stone Age and Bronze Age, hill Ovchular in Sharur, Sadarak, Khalaj, Macht, Dasharhe et al. Was established evolution common in IV-III thousand. BC .e. in Azerbaijan, the Caucasus, Asia Minor, Anatolia, Surya and Palestine Kura-Arax culture based eneolitnoy culture settled agricultural and pastoral tribes in ancient Nakhchivan, Karabakh and Urmia.

Early studies of the monuments of early urban culture of Azerbaijan have also been linked with the name of Veli Aliyev. As a result of research conducted in Nakhchivan, he proved the existence of the ancient city is cultural centers belonging to large tribal alliances and early gosudrastvennym structures in III-II century BC

Corresponding member of ANAS Vali Aliyev, in the south-Gamigaya Gapychyg peaks at an altitude of 3500-3700 meters above sea level have been detected and investigated elements of the ancient cultures of Nakhchivan-Petroglyphs (III-I millennium BC).
