Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

August 12 marks 80 years of well-known scientist-geologist, Honoured Scientist, head of the department "Industrial geology of oil and gas" of the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, corresponding member of ANAS - Baghir Ali oglu Baghirov.

Baghir Baghirov was born in 1936 in the village of Arkivan, Masalli region. In 1958 he graduated from the geological-exploration faculty of Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (present Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry).

In 1969 he received his PhD in Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, in 1984 - doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences and in 1990 - the title of professor. In 2001 he was elected a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

B.Baghirov’s career began in 1958 in the OGPU "Balakhanineft" (former Leninneft). Here he worked as an operator in the oil fields, as a geologist and chief geologist.

In 1969 he joined the Institute of deep oil and gas fields of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, where he successively held the positions of junior researcher, senior researcher, head of department, deputy director for scientific work.

B.Bagirov in 1989 was appointed head of the Department of Geology of Oil and Gas fields of Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, and performs this duty today.

Scientist’s main research is associated with the establishment of a reliable geological basis to ensure efficient development of oil and gas fields. As a result of these studies, who took as a basis the way arithmetization and computerization of geological data, he created a new trend in the oil and gas science.

Most of his scientific achievements has been included in a number of important results of the former Soviet Union and ANAS, used in the oil fields of the Republic and used in a number of research institutes.

Basic and applied research by B.Baghirov reflected in more than 300 scientific papers. He is the author of 6 monographs (including one in English), more than 60 methodical and manuals. He lectured at more than 10 international congresses and symposia.

Scientist has invested great effort in the training of engineers and highly qualified personnel. They prepared by hundreds of engineers, bachelors, masters and 15 PhDs, and currently is the supervisor of 5 PhD students.

B.Baghirov is a member of the Society of Petroleum Geologists of America and the European Union geologists and engineers.

He is a member of scientific councils of the Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry and the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS. He is a member of the editorial board of the journals "News" of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (series of Earth Sciences), as well as the "Bulletin of the technical universities of Azerbaijan."

The merits of the scientist were also highly appreciated by the state. In 2000 by the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan he was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Science.
