Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

The scientific community of Azerbaijan has suffered a heavy loss.

Prominent scientist of the Republic, honored scientist, laureate of the Azerbaijan Republic State Prize, active member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical sciences, Professor Arif Shafayat oglu Mehdiyev passed away on December 19, 2016 at age of 83.

Arif Mehdiyev was born on December 19, 1934 in Baku. He graduated from Moscow Electrotechnical Institute of Communications, specialty "Radio engineering" in 1952-1957.

He started his career in 1957 in the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Arif Mehdiyev, in 1961-1965; he worked in an institution under the Ministry of Electronic Industry of the USSR, and in 1965-1966 - a senior engineer at the Azerbaijan State Planning Committee.

Returning in 1966 to the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, until 1974, he worked there as a senior researcher. Since 1973, Arif Mehdiyev started working as a deputy director for scientific work of the Scientific Centre "Khazar" of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, who later became the Institute of Space Research of Natural Resources.

In 1979 he was transferred to the post of Deputy Director General created on the basis of the Center of the Institute of Space Research of Natural Resources. Arif Mehdiyev was the first Director General of Azerbaijan National Aerospace Agency, created on the basis of the Association.

Elected in 2001 as Vice-President of ANAS Arif Mehdiyev performed the post until 2007. From 2002 until his death he was chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of Azerbaijan Republic.

In 1969, Arif Mehdiyev defended his thesis, in 1984 - a doctoral thesis in physico-mathematical sciences, and became a professor in 1987. In 2001 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

Along with physics of semiconductors, scientific research of Arif Mehdiyev was closely connected with the sphere of space information. He is the author of fundamental works on studying of Earth from space by means of various technical means. Under its management research and project works in the sphere of obtaining, transformation, transfer, handling and submission of space information were carried out for a long time. Meet with approval of a merit of the scientist in creation of new technologies and forming of scientific concepts in this sphere. He made efforts for creation of various devices intended for space research. Arif Mehdiyev is known as well as the organizer and the research supervisor of a number of space experiments. Its researches made a special contribution to forming and development of the space informatics which is the new scientific direction. Works of the scientist on ecology were also highly appreciated by specialists.

Successfully lashing scientific creativity to pedagogical activities, Arif Mehdiyev as professor of the Azerbaijani oil academy and Azerbaijani academy of aircraft for many years took active part in training of highly qualified personnel. Activities of the scientist as organizer of science also meet with approval.

Arif Mehdiyev adequately represented the Azerbaijani science on prestigious international symposiums and conferences in the republic and outside the country, including on the world space congresses.

Results of researches of Arif Mehdiyev found reflection in more than 300 scientific works published in our country and abroad and over 50 inventions. Under its management in Azerbaijan dozens of doctors of science were prepared.

Scientific and scientific-organizational activities of Academician Arif Mehdiyev were highly appreciated by the state. For merits in development of Azerbaijani science scientist has been awarded the highest awards of the independent Azerbaijan Republic by orders "Shohrat" and "Sharaf".

The memory of a glorious past career Shafayat Arif oglu Mehdiyev will always live in the hearts of those who knew him.
