Corresponding member of ANAS Professor Khalil Gasimov is 75 years old

On February 28, a celebrate biophysicist - scientist, head department of Medical-Biological Sciences of the Azerbaijan State Physical Culture and Sports Academy, senior researcher of the Institute of Botany, corresponding member of ANAS Professor Khalil Mammadali oghlu Gasimov is 75 years old.

Khalil Gasimov was born on February 28, 1942 in Baku city. He finished secondary school N 160 in 1960, and graduated from “Physics” department of Azerbaijan State University.

He began for academic activity at the Institute of Physiology of ANAS in 1966, was seconded to the RAS Institute of Physics by the decision of the Presidium of ANAS for a one-year in 1967. In 1968, entered intramural education of this institute and functioned at the Laboratory of Cell biophysics.

Scientist defended PhD thesis in 1972, and doctoral thesis at the RAS Institute of Physics. In 2001, was elected a corresponding member of ANAS in “Physiology, biochemistry and biophysics”.

In 2008-2014, he worked a deputy director of ANAS Azerbaijan National Encyclopedia, then a director consultant, and lab chief at ANAS Institute of Botany in 2014-2016. Since 2016, head department of Medical-Biological Sciences of the Azerbaijan State Physical Culture and Sports Academy, meanwhile, a senior researcher of Physico-chemical properties of cell membrane laboratory of the Institute of Botany.

Kh. Gasimov is a well-known expert in the field of membrane transport biophysics, molecular organization of ion channels in lipid membranes. The researches of the scientist are associated with the study of the mechanism of selective transfer of ions and organic substances through the membranes, the development of theoretical foundations of membrane technology, and the study relationship of structure and function of membrane channel-forming compounds. Kh. Gasimov is one of the first Soviet researchers identified a large class of membrane-active polyene antibiotics and began to study the molecular mechanism of their action on bilayer lipid membranes. He theorized and then proved experimentally that the mechanism action of polyene antibiotics is the formation into the membranes in combination with cholesterol channels of molecular sizes that are permeable to ions and organic compounds. He was the first who is discovered the formation in the lipid membranes a single ion channels and studied their physical and chemical properties.

Notable scientist is an author of over 150 articles, 2 academic monographs and 7 patents.

He supervised a doctor of sciences and 6 PhDs.

Scientist is a member of “Biological membranes” Council, operating at RAS Presidium since 1985.

We congratulate notable biophysicist- scientist on the occasion of 75th anniversary and wish him successes in activity!
