We congratulate Vice-President of ANAS on the occasion of 70th jubilee!

May 23, a distinguished scientist, who had exceptional merits in Geology science, active member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Geology-Mineralogy, Professor, Vice-President of ANAS, director of the Institute of Oil-Gas of ANAS – Academic Ibrahim Said oghlu Guliyev is 70 years old.

Ibrahim Guliyev was born on May 23, 1947, in the village of Bazar-Kurgan of the Kirgizstan Republic in a family of first alumni from Azerbaijan Medical Institute. During 1954-1965, studied at Baku city secondary school N 15, after finishing entered Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry (present Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry Institute), department of geology-intelligence. In 1970, graduated the institute on specialty of mining engineer and by assignment was appointed to the post of head assistant at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Having worked as a head assistant, engineer, junior researcher and senior researcher at the Institute, I.Guliyev has held the positions of deputy director of science since 1985 here, a member and vice-president of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences since 2003, and director of the Institute of Oil-Gas since 2016.

I.S.Guliyev defended Ph.D. on geological-mineralogical sciences in specialty “Geochemical search methods of mineral deposits” in Moscow (1978), and doctoral thesis in specialty "Oil and gas geology, prospecting and exploration" in Moscow University (1989), gained the name of professor in 1999. In 2001, was elected a corresponding member of ANAS in specialty "Petroleum Geology and geochemistry", and active member of ANAS in specialty of "Geology" in 2007.

Guliyev I.S. is a prominent scientist in the field of geology and geochemistry of natural gases, oil-gas fields and mud volcanism. Under his supervision and participation have been conducted original investigations of a gas regime in folded areas with the assessment of amount of discharge of carbonaceous gases and their distribution in the surficial atmosphere. Together with colleagues from Germany for the first time there have been determined scientific-technological principles and there has been organized long-term telemetrical monitoring of gas discharge out of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan. There has been also determined regularity of change of gas regime of mud volcanoes in time depending on geological and cosmic factors. These investigations have contributed much to the studies of mechanism of “greenhouse effect”.

I. Guliyev and his colleagues have performed classical investigations of isotopic-geochemical composition of mud volcanos ejecta, rocks, oil, gas and water and compiled catalogues of eruptions with a detailed description of the greatest paroxysms, evaluation of amount of discharged breccia, gas, water and oil. These investigations enabled to create original physical-chemical model of mud volcanism which has been accepted by scientific society.

I.Guliyev with his colleagues from Geology Institute of ANAS and VNII oceanology (Russia) possess priority in the discovery and geological-geochemical studies of submarine mud volcanoes and mud-volcanic gashydrates in the Caspian Sea. Of a special practical importance are his studies of hydrocarbonaceous systems of rapidly subsiding basins (case study of the South Caspian basin). Results of basin’s simulation, investigations of velocities and range of generation, migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons in terms of rapid subsidence as well as studies of isotopic-geochemical properties of the organic matter, oil, gas and water enabled to determine a wide range and maximum depth of generation and preservation of hydrocarbons (up to 16-18 km) in the South Caspian basin.

Results of these investigations increased efficiency of exploration of hydrocarbonaceous deposits in Azerbaijan and efficiency of prediction of new on-shore and off-shore oil-gas fields.

He was awarded first State Prize of Independent Azerbaijan Republic for work cycle in field of study of mud volcanism and oil and gas content of the South Caspian basin (jointly with authors team).

I.Guliyev is the author of 22 research works, 10 monographs, including 114 works abroad and his works are cited on the foreign journals. He supervised 10 PhDs and 2 Doctors of Sciences.

Ibrahim Guliyev is the President of the Azerbaijan branch of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He engaged in pedagogical activity at the RDU's (Moscow) oil and gas department and Azerbaijan State Oil Academy department of geological exploration. He is a member of Azerbaijan National Committee of Geologists, the Society of Petroleum Geologists, a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, the President of the National Committee of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. Since 2015, he was elected the emeritus doctor of the China's Sichuan University and got a right to teach here.

I.Guliyev was deserved to the title of the Honored Scientist Republic of Azerbaijan in 2008 for effective scientific and organizational activity, and the first State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2010 for a series studies in volcanism and oil-gas field in the South Caspian basin.

Ibrahim Guliyev always behaved kind and attentive to his colleagues, friends and all students throughout the academic performance. He always has devoted his knowledge and skills for the development of the science of geology and education of young geologists. Ibrahim Guliyev has an active active role in reforms carried out for sake of ANAS development and integration into the world science.

We congratulate science patriot on the occasion of 70th jubilee, wish him robust health and successes in scientific activity!
