Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

August 14, prominent scientist-geologist, Honored Science Worker, Honored Geologist of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Knight of the Shohrat Order and Head of the Department of Petrology of ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Academician Arif Ismayilzadeh is 80.

Arif Ismailzade was born on August 14, 1937 in Baku city of to a family of intellectuals. In 1959 he graduated from the Geological and Exploration Department of the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute with a degree in geological engineering (modern Azerbaijan State Oil Academy). In 1968 he received a doctorate in philosophy, in 1990 - a doctor of science, in 2001 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS, and in 2007 - a full member of ANAS.

Since 1959, the scientist worked as a junior researcher, senior research fellow, head of the laboratory (since 1976 to this day) of the Institute of Geology. Since 1996 - an expert of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Higher Attestation Commission. In 2005 he was appointed Head of the Section of Petrology and Metallogeny of the Institute of Geology of ANAS. In 2007-2013 he held the post of academician-secretary of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS. Since 1995 - Executive Secretary of the National Committee of Geologists of Azerbaijan.

Since 2001, he is a member of the editorial board of the journals "Izvestia" of ANAS (series of Earth Sciences) and "Proceedings of the Institute of Geology of ANAS."

Since 2002, he teaches undergraduates selected disciplines at the Department of Mineral Resources of the Faculty of Geology of Baku State University.

The scientific activity of the academician is devoted to the study of the structure and phase state of the crustal particles, the modeling of the upper mantle and processes, the problems of the earth's crust and mantle developing in various geodynamic regimes of the destructive boundaries of lithospheric plates.

The results of researches of the scientist were reflected in 5 monographs and over 170 scientific works. These include the books "Magmatism", "Tectonics", "Minerals" 8-volume fundamental work "Geology of Azerbaijan", "Geology and volcanism of Talysh", "Paleogene evolution and sedimentary complexes of the South Caspian basin", etc.

He repeatedly represented Azerbaijan science at international congresses, symposiums, conferences and forums in various countries of the world.

The activity of A.Ismayilzade was highly appreciated by our state, was awarded the Order "Shohrat" was awarded the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science of the Republic of Azerbaijan", "Honored Geologist".
