Since 2016, Institute of Zoology of ANAS has been carrying out researches on artificial reproduction of medical leech in laboratory conditions.

For the first time in our country, Applied zoology Center of the Institute develops reproduction of medical leech in laboratory conditions.

In laboratory conditions, under positive 18-22 degrees in the winter and under 24-27 degrees in summer, with special care, leeches can produced at different times of the year and lay cocoon every 6-8 months.

It should be noted that leech is widely used in medicine. In our country, there are favorable conditions for the development of medicine in natural conditions. In Azerbaijan it is more likely to be found in Devechi port, KIchik Gizilagac Gulf, Lankaran natural reservoirs, Kuratrafi lakes, Nakhchivan and Ganja-Gazakh zone.
