Koichiro Matsuura, a feroign member of ANAS is 80

On September 29, Koichiro Matsuura, a feroign member of ANAS, Doctor of Law is 80.

He was born on September 29, 1937 in Tokyo. He studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo in 1956-1959, and then continued his education at the Iowa State College of Economics in Heyverford, Pennsylvania.

Scientist gained Doctor of Laws at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines in 2006 and Doctor of Philosophy at Kyung Hee University in 2008.

In 1963–1968 he assumed various posts at the central administration, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1974–1975 hosted the position of Director of the First North American Division (Political Affairs), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then Director of the Development Cooperation Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1977–1980 he continued activity as Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan, United States of America.

In 1992–1994 he worked as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. Appointing as Ambassador of Japan to France in 1994 the scientist played an important role in strengthening Japan-France relations.

He was appointed as UNESCO Director General on October 20, 1999. The ninth head of the organization, K.Matsuura, was the first representative of the Asian countries to this position. On October 12, 2005, he was re-elected as UNESCO Director General for four years.

Outstanding public political figure Matsuura is the author of several publications: 2004: Responding to the Challenges of the 21st Century (in English & French); 2003: Building the New UNESCO (in English & French);2002: A year of Transition (in English & French);1998: Japanese Diplomacy at the Dawn of the 21st Century (in French);1995: Development & Perspectives of the Relations between Japan and France (in French);1994: The G-7 Summit: Its History and Perspectives (in Japanese);1992: History of Japan-United States Relations (in Japanese);1990: In the Forefront of Economic Cooperation Diplomacy (in Japanese).

K.Matsuura was elected Honorary Doctor of the Peoples Friendship University of Russia on June 10, 2008 for his contributions to strengthening international cooperation.

Since 2003 he is the Honorary Doctor of Moscow State University named after M. Lomonosov.

He is an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Art.

K.Matsuura was elected as an external member of ANAS on May 12, 2008.
