Population educated on dangers of radon gas

ANAS Scientists of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) conducted educational meetings in various regions of the country in connection with the danger of radon and methods of combating it.

The meetings was organized on the basis of the presentation of the popular scientific brochure on "Radon and human health" at the structures of the Republican Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology (RCHE) in Shamakhi, Ismayilli, Lerik and Masalli regions, as well as Lankaran Regional Scientific Center of ANAS.

head of the Department of Geochemistry and Fluid Dynamics of Sedimentary Basins of the IGG, Academician Akber Feizullayev and the head of the radiometry department of the geological environment, correspondent member of ANAS Chingiz Aliyev reported at the meetings.

Specialists noted that, excess of radon in nature leads to the formation of lung cancer, and takes second place after smoking among the causes of this disease. In 2010 IGG together with foreign scientists began research in the field of radon distribution in the territory of our country. As a result of the research conducted with the financial support of the National Science Foundation of Switzerland, a "Map of the distribution of volumetric activity of radon in the territory of Azerbaijan" was compiled. Excess of norm of radon, is generally observed in a number of the settlements located in mountain territories. Now continuation of researches and bringing to the public of ways of fight against this natural gas follow from the tasks set in "The program of actions for a research and decrease in threats of radon in the Azerbaijan Republic for 2014-2018".

It was noted that, the popular scientific brochure "Radon and human health" tells about natural radiation, its sources and the danger that radon creates for human health. In addition, the new edition provides detailed information on methods for reducing threats, protecting people from them and significant regulatory acts in this direction. The brochure was prepared as a result of joint studies launched in 2010 by A.Fazullayev, C.Aliyev, young scientist Farah Mahmudova and Rauf Baghirli.

The brochure will serve as a useful source for construction companies and individuals interested in radiation safety, in particular, for those who live in areas with high radon levels.
