Azerbaijani scientist elected as 1st Vice President of World Congress on Medical Law

Israeli Ministry of Health and Tel Aviv University held the 24th World Congress on Medical Law (WAML) in Tel Aviv.

At the scientific sessions of the Congress, topical scientific and practical problems of forensic medicine and medical law were discussed: forensic medical examination, safety and patient rights, healthcare legislation and medical ethics, bioethics and human rights, public health and environmental ethics, genetics, ethics and law, legal and ethical problems in the field of reproductive technologies, etc.

Holding since 2012, the posts of Vice-President and Board Member of the Association, Professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Law Faculty of the Baku State University and Baku Branch of the First Moscow State Medical University after I.M.Sechenov, head of the Azerbaijan Bureau of the UNESCO Chair on Bioethics, Doctor Vugar Mammadov was unanimously elected as a 1st Vice-President of WAML and one of the four members of the Executive Committee of the organization.

President of WAML, Professor Thomas Noguchi, appointed our compatriot as Chairman of the WAML Education Committee, in which he, together with professors from Great Britain, Canada, Belgium, Peru, Australia, Russia, Nigeria and Israel, will organize and conduct various international projects to strengthen the ethical and legal component in the professional training of doctors and health workers. Professor V.Mammadov, having received the largest number of votes, was nominated as a candidate to represent the WAML from 2019 at the International Criminal Court in The Hague (Netherlands). At the congress, Azerbaijan was represented at a high level by both scientists and students of the Baku branch of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M.Sechenov.

WAML was established in 1967 in Belgium by a group of world-renowned experts in the field of law and forensic medicine with the aim of scrutinizing multicultural and interdisciplinary issues in the field of medical law. WAML cooperates closely with UNESCO, the International Criminal Court and many national professional associations. The headquarters of WAML is located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Last year, by the support of Pasha Travel and Turkish Airlines the XXIII World Congress on Medical Law was held in Baku at the JW Marriott Absheron Hotel. By the decision of the General Assembly of WAML for outstanding achievements in the development of medical law, bioethics and multiculturalism, First Vice-President of Azerbaijan, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva was awarded a special award "WAML 50th GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY AWARD" and a diploma of WAML.

UNESCO and ISESCO Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva is one of the first scientific researchers in the post-Soviet space to study bioethical and medico-legal issues of euthanasia. This award recognizes the results of its scientific research, its involvement in projects in the fields of health, science and education, and efforts to promote and promote multicultural dialogue between different religions and civilizations to strengthen the spirit of tolerance, global security and peace.

The 25th World Medical Law Congress will be held on August 6-8, 2019 in Tokyo by the support of the Tokyo and Waseda Universities.
