ANAS National Museum of Azerbaijan History held international symposium dedicated to outstanding thinker Ahmad bey Agaoglu

ANAS National Museum of Azerbaijan History held an international symposium dedicated to the 150th anniversary of an outstanding thinker, statesman, one of the National Awakening Movement leaders of the XIX and XX centuries.

Opening the event, Director of the Museum, academician Naila Valikhanli spoke on the place and role of Ahmad bey Agaoglu in the history of social and political thought in Azerbaijan and the Turkic world as a whole.

It was noted that, A.Agaoglu was born in Shusha, Karabakh - an integral part of Azerbaijan. After gradueting from the famous French Sorbonne University, he taught French in Shusha, collaborated with the “Kaspi” newspaper, was the editor-in-chief of the “Irshad” newspaper and created the “Difai” organization to save our people from the Armenian Genocide.

During the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic A.Agaoglu was elected as a Member of Zangezur Parliament. Later, he continued his work in Turkey and held important government posts.

Speaking about the importance of an international symposium dedicated to an outstanding thinker, N.Velikhanli noted on the social and political activities of A.Agaoglu in Azerbaijan and Turkey, his services in the formation of Turkic ideology, the problems of modernization of the East and role of A.Agaoglu generation in the political life ofTurkey.

It was noted that, the event will be participate by scientists from Azerbaijan, Iran, the Netherlands, Russia and Turkey and more than 30 scientific reports will be delivered. The symposium will be attended by relatives of A.Agaoglu living in Turkey-great-grandson of Ahmad Agaoglu, sister’s granddaughter - Professor Yasemin Injeoglu Giritli and Yeshim Agaoglu.

The vice-president of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbayli noted on the rich heritage of A.Agaoglu and its popularization. According to the academician, the Order by AR President on the 150th anniversary of Ahmad bey Agaoglu opens up great opportunities for the depth study of his legacy. He spoke about the personality of A.Agaoglu and his role in preventing the Armenian invasion and in National Awakening.

In turn, the chairman of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan, People’s writer Anar spoke on A.Agaoglu’s homeland, various aspects of the national struggle, that he waged, on activities as a scientist. He said that, A.Agaoglu, who was the founder and editor of several newspapers, wrote about Shusha everywhere and kept the Karabakh dialect in his speech till the end of his life.

The the special work of the Azerbaijan Ambassador to Hungary, Professor Vilayat Guliyev to explore the heritage of A.Agaoglu was stressed. 

The sister's granddaughter of the  prominent thinker, Professor Yasemin Injeoglu Giritli called A.Agaoglu an ideologist and a brave newspaperman, important for Azerbaijan and Turkey and commended the Museum's management for organizing the event.
