A meeting on upcoming challenges in the field of seismology was held at ANAS under the chairmanship of the president of ANAS academician Isa Habibbayli

On the 20 th of February, a meeting on upcoming challenges in the field of seismology was held   at ANAS under the chairmanship of the president of ANAS academician Isa Habibbayli.

Academician Isa Habibbayli, the president of ANAS, academicians Arif Hashimov and Ibrahim Guliyev the members of the Presidium of ANAS, as well as  Gurban Yetirmishli the General  Director of the RSSC  and corresponding member of ANAS, Huseyn Huseynov, Head of the Science and Education Department of the Presidium of ANAS, assoc. prof, PhD on technical sciences, Agahuseyn Shukurov, Head of the Media and Communication Department of the Presidium of ANAS, PhD in philosophy attended the meeting.

Speaking at the event, academician Isa Habibbayli mentioned that due to the location of Azerbaijan and a number of neighboring countries in the seismically active zone, special attention is paid to this area in our country. He noted that the main center of seismic research in Azerbaijan is the Republican Center of Seismological Service at ANAS, which uses seismic stations to study the seismic regime of the territory of the republic, the patterns of distribution of earthquake epicenters, and the dynamics of seismic processes in focal zones, study the mechanism of occurrence of sources of strong earthquakes and assess the seismic risk of large cities.

The head of ANAS reminded that In order to support the activity of the center, the Board of Directors decided to update the material and technical base and software of the institution, to expand the use of artificial intelligence in this field, and to further expand and improve the quality of complex seismological-geophysical-geodynamic research in 2023.

Academician Isa Habibbayli said that currently one of the main problems in this field is the lack of doctoral education in the field of "Seismology" in the country. This in itself complicates  the process of highly qualified personnel training. The head of the academy pointed out that a petition will be filed before the relevant state institutions to solve the problem of training highly qualified specialists in seismology at the Republican Seismological Service Center under ANAS.

He pointed out that, In addition, the seismic station network of the Seismological Center is expanding throughout the country, the well-bottom seismic station donated by the  Disasters and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Turkey to the Republic Seismological Service Center 2024, in Shusha  will be put into use, new seismic stations will be created to monitor seismic processes in other territories released from occupation.

At the same time, he said that the discussions and planned mutual visits between the Seismological Service Center and Oxford University of Great Britain in the direction of conducting joint scientific research and implementing projects are commendable. A group of management and employees of the Earth Sciences Department of ANAS and the Republican Seismological Service Center under ANAS will make scientific reports at the international symposium on seismology which will  be held at Oxford University.

Later, the General Director of the RSSC, corresponding member of ANAS Gurban Yetirmishli informed about the main tasks and priority research facing the institution he leads, as well as the upcoming international conference on seismology in Baku, organized by ANAS.

Academician Arif Hashimov and academician Ibrahim Guliyev made a speech  at the meeting and expressed their opinions and proposals on the issues discussed.
