December 19, Vagif Farzaliyev, academician, chemist, laureate of the Order of Shohrat and the Prize named after academician Yusif Mammadaliyev, Honored Scientist, academician-secretary of the Division of Chemical Sciences, director of the Institute of Additive Chemistry, will be turn 80 years old.

Vagif Farzaliyev was born on December 19 in 1939 in Baku. After graduating from school No. 189, he entered the Azerbaijan State University at the Faculty of Chemistry (1958). He published his first scientific work in the field of petrochemistry in the Vestnik ASU while still a student (1962). He graduated from the University with honors (1963) by distribution, he was admitted to the Institute of Petrochemical Processes named after Yu.Mamedalieva Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR as an engineer. In 1963-1966 studied at the graduate school of the Institute of Additive Chemistry (IAC) of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. Since 1966 he worked there as a junior, then a senior research fellow (1974). Since 1979, Vagif Farzaliyev has been a UNESCO adviser in the field of additives and lubricants. Since 1988, he is director of the Institute of Additive Chemistry. At the same time, in 2007-2013, the scientist was an academician-secretary of ANAS, since 2019 he is an academician-secretary of the Division of Chemical Sciences.

In 1968 he defended his thesis “Synthesis and study of polymeric additives for lubricating oils”, and in 1986 - his doctoral thesis “Scientific basis for the development of highly effective sulfur-containing additives for lubricating oils”. In 1987 he became a professor, in 2001 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS, in 2007 – an active member.

Under the guidance of a scientist, a number of highly effective additives to lubricating oils, fuels, and cutting fluids have been synthesized. He studied the mechanism of the functional action of additives, the relationship between composition, structure and their functional effectiveness, developed the scientific basis for the creation of highly effective additives. The mechanism of antioxidant action of sulfur compounds of phenols and amines was first revealed. Based on the results of these studies, a number of highly effective combined antioxidant additives have been synthesized.

V. Farzaliyev is the author of 670 scientific works, including 114 copyright certificates and patents, three monographs and one book. About 300 of his works were published abroad, and more than 120 scientific papers were published in journals abstracted and indexed in international databases.

The results of scientific research of V. Farzaliyev have always been highly appreciated.

The academician was awarded the Jubilee Medal in memory of the 100th anniversary of V.I. Lenin (1970), the gold (1971, 1977) and the bronze medals (1981) of the All-Union Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the USSR, the medal "For Labor Valor" (1986), the medal "Veteran of Labor" (1987 ), the Order of “Shohrat” (2005), the honorary title “Honored Worker of Science”, the exclusive British Queen Queen Victoria Award (2011), the gold medal and diploma of the European Union Chamber of Science and Industry (2013), the award named after Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev of ANAS (2017).
