Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

A prominent chemist, member of the New York Academy of Sciences, foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, honored scientist, laureate of the Order of Shohrat, Head of the Organic Chemistry Department of Baku State University, academician Abel Maharramov is 70 years old.

Abel Maharramov was born on January 5, 1950 in Aghdam. He graduated from Gullubulag village secondary school in Amasiya district of Western Azerbaijan in 1966 with a medal and was admitted to the Chemistry Department of the present Baku State University (BSU). After graduating from the University in 1971, he was assigned to the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Olefins. In 1973 A.Maharramov was accepted into postgraduate study at Moscow State University named after M.V.Lomonosov on specialty "Organic Chemistry". In 1999-2018 he was the rector of BSU.

Academician defended his PhD thesis in 1976 on topic “A new method of increasing the electrophilicity of sulphenchlorides in addition reactions to the double bonds”, and doctoral thesis on “New synthetic approaches based on electrophilic reactions of alkenes, three-membered carbo- and heterocyclic compounds” in 1991. He was elected a corresponding member of ANAS in 2001, an active member in  2007.

As a result of the researches conducted by the academician, a new synthesis method, known as the "doping effect" in organic chemistry, was identified. However, synthesis of some classical organic matter, which is difficult or practically impossible, has been carried out.

A.Maharramov is the author of 1270 scientific articles, about 10 monographs, 37 textbooks and teaching aids, including 54 copyright certificates and patents, 33 inventions. Under his guidance 53 PhDs and 41 doctors of sciences were trained.

For his scientific results and services in educative construction, the chemist was awarded the Gold Medal named after Y. Mammadaliyev (1999), the Honorable Scientist (2000), the Romanian Commander-in-Chief, the Red Star (2004) and the Republic of Azerbaijan's "Shohrat" (2009), the Gold Medal of the Economic Cooperation Organization, the Golden Buta Award, the 2012 ISESCO Award in Science and Technology, and others.

He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Honorary Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Vice-President of the Eurasian Universities Association, Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Professor of the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov and an honorary doctorate of the Tirana Technical University of Albania.
