Japanese scientists study findings of the Mesolithic and Neolithic period of Azerbaijan

Archaeologist Hiroto Nakata, Doctor of Writing at Kokukakuin University in Tokyo, and Archaeologist Sashi Arai, Doctor of the Japan Foundation for the Development of Science and the University of Advanced Studies, conduct desk studies at the Archaeological Fund of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography.

The main object of desk research by Japanese scientists is the stone and bone tools of the Mesolithic and Neolithic period, discovered during archaeological excavations in Azerbaijan. A traological analysis of the detected instruments reveals similar and distinctive features of the technology for processing stone and bone of the Mesolithic and Neolithic, people living in Azerbaijan, revealing local features and possible migration vectors. At the same time, studies conducted by Japanese experts using modern technologies allow us to get an idea of the climate, flora and fauna of Azerbaijan during the Mesolithic.

Japanese experts are members of the Azerbaijan-Japan International Archaeological Expedition, which in 2015-2019 conducted research on Mount Avey and Damjili Cave in the western regions of Azerbaijan.
