Employees of the Carpet Weaving Sector of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS visited the expedition in Gobustan region at their own expense. The purpose of the expedition was to identify and study the types of wool suitable for carpet weaving.

Head of the sector, prof. Vidadi Muradov said that currently carpet weaving is becoming one of the leading sectors of the non-oil sector in our country. The goal is to weave the Azerbaijani carpet on the basis of local raw materials.

"Historically, the Azerbaijani carpet was famous for its weaving of yarns made of wool of local sheep breeds and dyed with natural dyes," said Vidadi Muradov and noted that sheep breeds such as Absheron, Balbas, Bozakh, Jero, Herik, Lezgi, Mazikh, Merinos, Gala, Garabakh, Tush, Garadolag and Shirvan are made of quality wool. According to him, this tradition continues today. There are large sheep farms in Gobustan region. In the villages of Chalov, Jayirli, Nabur, Sundu, etc. of Gobustan region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the population is engaged in sheep-breeding as the main economic sector, where the raw materials for woven carpets and carpet products are also made from local wool.

The sector head said that several large sheep farms of Gobustan region were studied during the expedition, adding that Shirvan and Karabakh sheep breeds were bred in these farms. He noted that since last year, all large sheep farms in the region have been delivering wool to the Gobustan regional wool and dye plant supply point of Azerkhalcha OJSC.

The wool obtained from sheep breeds bred in the Gobustan region is suitable for the carpet industry due to its quality, especially the length of the fiber, Muradov added.
