The tragedy of the occupation

At the end of the 20th century, the territories of Azerbaijan were occupied by Armenia. As a result of Armenia's military aggression against Azerbaijan, over 1 million Azerbaijanis became internally displaced persons, 20 thousand people were killed during the hostilities, 4,866 Azerbaijanis disappeared without a trace, 100 thousand people were injured, 50 thousand people became disabled. 17 thousand square meters were occupied. km of the most fertile lands of the republic, 900 settlements, 130939 houses, 2389 industrial and agricultural facilities, 1025 educational, 798 medical and 1510 cultural institutions, 5198 km of highways, 348 bridges, 7568 km of water supply lines and 76,940 km of power lines were destroyed.

In the occupied territories, the Armenian invaders with particular cruelty destroyed the cultural objects that make up the cultural heritage of Azerbaijan. 12 museums, 6 art galleries, 9 palaces of historical importance were robbed and burned, 40 thousand museum exhibits were destroyed, 44 temples and 18 mosques were desecrated. In the burned 927 libraries, 4,600,000 (four million six hundred thousand) books and rare manuscripts were destroyed.

It is impossible to fully measure the damage that the Armenian invaders inflicted on the cultural heritage of Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions, since the robbed and destroyed treasures are examples of the culture of not only Azerbaijan, but of the entire world civilization. According to preliminary and inaccurate information, along with the mental and psychological trauma inflicted on the population, the economy of Azerbaijan was damaged in the amount of more than 60 billion US dollars.
