Congratulations to Professor Adil Aliyev on his 90th anniversary!

Today is the 90th anniversary of prominent oil geologist, geochemist and volcanologist, head of the Department of Mud Volcanism of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) of ANAS, Ph.D., Professor Adil Aliyev.

Adil Abbasali oglu Aliyev was born on September 7, 1930 in Baku. After successfully finishing from the capital's secondary school No. 3 in 1949, he was admitted to the Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University). He graduated from the university with honors in 1954, majoring in oil geology. The scientist began his scientific career in January of that year at the Institute of Geology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (now IGG).

In 1954, he was admitted to graduate school in "Oil and Gas Geology", in 1958 he defended his dissertation and received the degree of Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. A year later, he became a senior researcher and in the following years headed the laboratories of Bituminology and Organic Materials of Rocks (1969-1970) and Geochemistry of Mud Volcanoes (1972-1986). From 1986 to 1990, he worked as a chief engineer-geochemist and scientific adviser at the Syrian Oil Company (Damascus). In 1992, Aliyev defended his doctoral dissertation on "Geochemistry of mud volcanism and oil and gas of great depths." Since 1997, he has headed the Department of Mud Volcanism at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics.

The talented scientist has studied the geology of Azerbaijan, including mud volcanoes, with prestigious oil companies (BP, Statoil, Amoko, Exxon, etc.), European and Western universities (Italy, Germany) operating in Baku since the 90s. During his scientific activity he participated in a number of international scientific projects, expeditions, etc.

The atlas of "World Mud Volcanoes", which is valued as an unprecedented contribution to the world's geological science and was created for the first time on the initiative of Azerbaijani scientists, was prepared under the leadership of Professor Aliyev and published in three languages by a prestigious Italian publishing house. Dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Academy, this unique scientific work contains all the information about 2,500 mud volcanoes in 42 countries.

Under his leadership, a two-year pilot grant project "Azerbaijani oil" worth 1 million manat was received through the Science Development Fund under the President of Azerbaijan. According to the state program on the year of tourism, the Department of Mud Volcanism headed by the scientist has prepared a guidebook "Mud Volcanoes of Azerbaijan", a booklet and passports of mud volcanoes for 3 tourist routes.

Aliyev is the author of more than 300 scientific works, including 15 books. In recent years, professor supervised for 10 doctors of sciences and philosophy.

The scientific and public activity of the prominent scientist has been duly appreciated by our state. He was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Scientist of the Republic of Azerbaijan" in 2005, a personal scholarship of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2008, the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2010, the Order of Shohrat in 2018 and many medals. He was awarded a diploma and honorary degrees.

We congratulate Professor Adil Aliyev on his 90th anniversary and wish him further success in his future multifaceted activities and robust health.
