Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

Today is the 70th anniversary of prominent scientist, People's Writer, public figure, Honored Scientist, Order of Glory, Rector of the Azerbaijan University of Languages, Academician Kamal AbdullayevK. Abdullah was born on December 4, 1950 in a family of intellectuals. He finished the secondary school № 190 in Baku in 1968. Studied in the Faculty of Philology of the Azerbaijan State University in the 1968–1973s. He was a full-time post-graduate student of the Department of Turkish Languages of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR AS in the 1973–1976s.

K.Abdullayev defended his candidacy dissertation named "Syntactic parallelism" (on the basis of epos "Kitabi Dede Gorgud") in Moscow in January 1977. In 1984 he defended his doctor’s dissertation named "Theoretical problems of the syntax of the Azerbaijani language" in Baku. In 2007 he was elected a correspondent of ANAS, in 2014 a full member.

In 1984-1987 he was the head of the Department of General and Azerbaijani Linguistics of the Institute of Foreign Languages, in 1988-1990 he was the first deputy chairman of the Azerbaijan Cultural Foundation (now the Azerbaijan Creative Foundation), and since 1990 he has been the chairman of the board. In 1990, he was elected head of the Department of General and Russian Linguistics of the Institute of Russian Language and Literature named after M.F.Akhundov.In 1994-1995 he was a professor of Turkish language and literature at Uludag University in Bursa (Turkey). From 1993 to 2000 he again worked as the head of the Department of General and Azerbaijani Linguistics of the Institute of Foreign Languages. In May 2000, he was appointed rector of the MFAkhundov Institute of Russian Language and Literature. In June 2000, by the order of the great leader Heydar Aliyev, he was appointed rector of the newly established Baku Slavic University. He served as rector until February 2014. In 2011-2014, he worked as an academic secretary of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

By the Decree of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 28 February 2014, he was appointed the State Adviser for multinational, multicultural and religious affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan. By the Decree of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated June 1, 2017, he was appointed the rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages.

He is the author of more than 300 articles and 20 textbooks and monographs.

He wrote and published books “Secret Dede Gorgud” (1991), “Mystery or Secret Dede Gorgud – 2” (Baku, Science, 1999), “From myth to the article – Hidden Dede Gorgud”.

He is engaged in arts, his plays, stories, novels, essays and poems are published in Azerbaijan and abroad.His works have been translated into Turkish, Russian, Georgian, English, French, German, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Ukrainian, Finnish, Arabic, Japanese, Montenegrin, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz and other languages. His plays have been staged in Azerbaijani, Georgian and Estonian theaters.On December 3, 2015, by the Order of the President of the country, he was awarded the Order of Glory of Azerbaijan, in 2019, the honorary title of "People's Writer" for his services to the development of Azerbaijani culture, on July 10, 2019 "100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-2018)" Jubilee medal, and on July 19, 2019 by the Order of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan he was awarded the jubilee medal "Azerbaijan Diplomatic Service - 100th anniversary (1919-2019)".
