Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

On January 14, prominent scientist, petroleum geologist, first vice-president of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic, laureate of Azerbaijan State Prize, veteran oilman of the USSR, “Honor” and “Glory” order laureate, academician Khoshbakht Yusifzadeh is 85 years old.

Kh. Yusifzadeh was born in Pirshagi, Baku on January 14, 1930. Finished secondary school in 1947 and entered Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (now the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy) faculty of geological exploration. Graduating from the Institute on “Geology and exploration of oil and gas fields” in 1952, he owned the profession of “mining engineer and geologist”.

His professional career has begun at “Statespacialoilproject”, USSR Ministry of Oil Industry in Baku, then worked at “Dənizneft” Union, where he took posts of senior engineer and head of the department. In March of 1954, was appointed the senior geologist to the first mine of “Gurganneft” Trest (now the “Neft dashlary” OGPU).

In 1958-1959 became senior geologist of “Neft dashlary” Central research and production shop, in 1959-1960 worked in the post of head shop.

During the years of 1970-1992 worked in the posts of first deputy director –senior geologist of the” “Caspian Sea oil” Union, “Caspian Sea oil” Production Association, the All-Union “Caspian Sea oil and gas industry” Union, “Caspian Sea oil and gas” Production Association and “Caspian Sea oil” Production Association.

In 1992-1994, became first vice-president of “Azerineft” State Concern, Adviser to the President to the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), served as vice-president of SOCAR for geology, geophysics and field development (1994-2004). Since 2004, he is the first vice-president of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan for proceeding of geology, geophysics and field development by the decision of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev.

Scientist defended PhD thesis on “Exploring oil wells and layers and effective development and operation facilities in the southwest wing of the Neft dashlary” (1960), doctoral thesis on “Principles and methods of conducting exploring workflow in the sea oil and gas fields” at the Institute of Geology and Processing of the Burning Fossils (1987), received the degree of Dr. Geology-mineralogy. In 2005, was awarded the academic title of “Professor”.

Since 2007 is a member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

By his supervising more than 20 industries, including the world-famous “Azeri”, “Chirag” and “Guneshli” fields have been discovered and commissioned in the Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Russia's sectors of the Caspian Sea. Since 1988 he had an indispensable role in exploration workflow joint with foreign companies including, “Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli” (deepest part of the sea), and in discovery of “Ashrafi”, “Karabakh”, “Shahdeniz”, “Absheron” fields, as well as SOCAR's “Umid” oil bed in 2010.

Kh. Yusifzadeh’s researches have contributed to prevent bottlenecks in exploration and development of oil and gas-condensate fields. Outcomes of research works conducted with his leadership and participation found out in 188 scientific works, including 12 monographs and 8 inventions.

Kh. Yusifzadeh was deserved to a number of state prizes and honored titles such as Order of Sovereignty (2000), Order of Glory 92004), Order of Honor (2010) for his contributions in development of oil and gas exploration in Azerbaijan and in the Caspian Sea.

For his contribution to the development and application of nanotechnology in the field of oil production in 2010, awarded a special medal of UNESCO joint with a group of academic experts, and his name has been included in the Encyclopedia of this international organization.

By the decision of the Turkic World Studies International Academy of Sciences, the scientist was awarded with “Gold Star Medal” (2008) of this academy for his merits in the spheres of research, education and economics of the Turkic world, was declared “Scientist of the Year” (2011), and “Honorary Scientist of the Turkic World” (2011).
