Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

On September 25, a presentation ceremony titled “The Electronic Library at ANAS: Entering a New Stage” was held at the Central Scientific Library (CSL) of ANAS.

The event was attended by the president of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, department heads from the Presidium administration of ANAS, heads of scientific research institutions of ANAS, library directors, responsible personnel for electronic services, public figures, and media representatives. The new website and electronic library of the CSL were presented during the event. 

Academician Isa Habibbeyli opened the event with a speech, underlining that the new building of the Central Scientific Library was opened on May 5, 2014 with the participation of the head of state and from today, the CSL will also operate as an enriched electronic library. The head of the Academy highly valued the steps of CSL taken towards establishing an excellent electronic library and emphasized the significance of presenting the first phase of the work conducted in this field.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that, as a result of the work carried out over the past four months, the volume of electronic resources of the Central Scientific Library has increased ten times.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli highly praised recent projects implemented in the library and emphasized that two-shift work schedule is significant for the users. He also noted that the CSL's volunteer program, starting this month, is one of the important initiatives of the renewed Academy.

The head of the Academy also mentioned that ANAS has transitioned to a unified Electronic Document Circulation across the country, including steps taken towards the establishment of the electronic archive of ANAS and significant work on the electronic movement has been undertaken in the renewed Academy.

During the presentation ceremony, the director of the Central Scientific Library, docent Huseyn Huseynov provided extensive information about the goals of the library's new website and enriched electronic library. He said that although the e-library had been available online on the library's website, the existence of certain technical shortcomings created a significant need for the enhancement of electronic services. He underlined that the new website, designed to meet the needs of library users, presents information to readers in a simple and accessible form.

The library director also said that the electronic library is accessible to all readers from any point in the world 24 hours a day, and the website also provides links to the pages of more than 80 leading libraries worldwide.

Huseyn Huseynov stated that the main page of the website features a section with valuable thoughts of the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev, along with sections such as “About the Library”, “Activity Directions”, “E-Services”, “Media”, “Service Information”, and “For Readers”. He also pointed out that the projects such as “Open Door Days” and “CSL Volunteers” implemented by the library are featured on the website. The director emphasized that for the first time, the “Information” section on the library's website allows users to obtain audiovisual information about the library's areas of activity through artificial intelligence technology.

“The ‘E-Services’ section of the website includes parts such as e-books, full-text databases, abstracts, journals, digital libraries, maps, newly added books, and our information resources. These sections contain materials on statehood, the development of Azerbaijani and world science, culture, and the arts, as well as collections of scholars, texts of laws, decrees, orders, and other documents. “Photo Gallery” and “Video Gallery” sections have been created. Readers can access leading libraries and databases of Azerbaijan and the world, conduct patent searches and the CSL users can read the full text of books from anywhere in the world using their reader card numbers”-the director said.

At the event, the deputy director for Electronic Services and Information Resources of CSL Oruj Guliyev, the head of the “Electronic Academy” Department of the Presidium administration of ANAS, PhD in mathematics Fariz Imranov, the head of the Document Management and Protocol Department of the Presidium administration of ANAS, PhD in philology Asmar Aliyeva, the head of the Science and Education Department of the Presidium administration of ANAS, Doctor of philology Sarkhan Khaveri, the scientific secretary of CSL, Shabnam Rustamova, and the head of the Bibliographic and Electronic Services Department Aytan Aliyeva  made speeches at the event highlighting the advantages and significance of the website.

In conclusion, Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized the necessity of further expanding and improving the electronic movement at the National Academy of Sciences as well as developing new scientific communication technologies such as electronic documents, electronic archives, and electronic libraries. He also gave his relevant instructions and recommendations.
