A joint meeting dedicated to the “Green World Solidarity Year” and “COP29” was held with the joint organization of division of Physical, Mathematical and Technical Sciences and division of Earth Sciences of ANAS.
In his opening speech president of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli spoke about the significance of the order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on declaring 2024 as the “Green World Solidarity Year” in Azerbaijan and the importance of the upcoming COP29 conference in Baku. Academician Isa Habibbeyli underlined that, in line with the policy conducted by the head of state, a green movement has started in Azerbaijan. He stated that that these innovations cover all sectors of society and give an impetus to the development of priority areas in science. The Academician mentioned that a series of events are organized, books and monographs are prepared at ANAS within the framework of the “Green World Solidarity Year” and COP29.
The head of ANAS stated that extensive discussions are held in all divisions of the Academy on relevant topics, our scholars and intellectuals actively participate in solving current scientific problems and make significant contributions to COP29 and the “Green World Solidarity Year”. He also highlighted the importance of the joint meeting in terms of expanding the relations between division of Physical, Mathematical and Technical Sciences and division of Earth Sciences of ANAS.
After, the vice-president of ANAS and director general of the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Academician Rasim Aliguliyev delivered a speech on the topic “Positive and Negative Aspects of the Interactions between Green and Digital Transformations”. He noted that the formation of the information society in Azerbaijan, healthy environment and a green society are among the main priorities of state policy. The Academician spoke about the development of green and digital transformations in our country, as well as the purposeful measures implemented in the direction of solving environmental problems, the decrees and orders and important documents. He assessed the decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan this year as a real result of the policy carried out by President Ilham Aliyev in the country aimed at formation a green society. The Academician emphasized that the declaration of 2024 as the “Green World Solidarity Year” and hosting of such a significant event as COP29 set important tasks for relevant state institutions and the scientific community.
Speaking about the negative impacts of digital transformation on the ecosystem Academician Rasim Aliguliyev underlined that the energy source of the information society is electricity, and without a supply of electricity, the information society cannot exist. The scientist noted that negative impacts also include electronic waste, batteries, accumulators, and the continuously generated flow of information—Big Data, etc.
According to the Academician, the positive impacts of digital technologies on green transformations include the transition from paper-based information carriers to electronic technologies, digital state, the Internet, satellite technologies, green digital technologies, artificial intelligence technologies, and so on.
“Research related to green digital technologies is a focus of the Institute of Information Technology”-said the Academician and highlighted that the institute is conducting studies on parallel processing models of Big Data resources, the synthesis of optimal cloud systems, green software systems, smart digital state architectural solutions, models for the formation of a green digital economy, and research on the national radiation safety system within the Industry 4.0 platform.

At the end, Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that the presented reports addressed important issues responding to global challenges and the demands of world science. The head of ANAS highlighted the significance of the meeting, which covered the challenges of COP29, issues raised by the head of state, and current scientific topics related to artificial intelligence, in terms of the solidarity of the scientists, the development of joint projects, and the integration of Azerbaijani science into the international arena.
