On September 12, the Institute of Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences hosted a scientific session entitled “Bakir Nabiyev and the Current Problems of Literary Studies,” dedicated to the 95th anniversary of academician Bakir Nabiyev, laureate of the State Prize, Honored Scientist, and recipient of the “Friendship of Peoples,” “Glory,” and “Independence” orders.
Prior to the session, an exhibition highlighting the scholarly legacy of the eminent literary critic was presented.
Opening the event, ANAS President and Director of the Institute of Literature, academician Isa Habibbayli, underscored the multifaceted contributions of Bakir Nabiyev, one of the most distinguished figures in twentieth-century Azerbaijani literary scholarship. He noted that Nabiyev’s fundamental works made significant contributions to the advancement of literary studies and that his services played an invaluable role in the development of both the discipline and public thought.
The head of ANAS characterized academician Bakir Nabiyev as a master literary scholar, emphasizing that he was the author of the first monographic work dedicated to Firudin bey Kocharli. He noted that this book, based on archival materials, has retained its scholarly value over time. This publication, together with the scholar’s candidate and doctoral dissertations as well as his numerous monographs, is still regarded as one of the fundamental studies in the field of literary historiography.
The President of ANAS further stated that the Azerbaijani literary and scholarly community primarily recognizes academician Bakir Nabiyev as a critical literary scholar. He underlined that Nabiyev’s literary-critical legacy constitutes more than half a century of the history of Azerbaijani literary studies. His articles and substantial scholarly works on both his contemporaries and classical authors continue to serve as a valuable source for the new generation of researchers.
Academician Isa Habibbayli noted that the distinguished scholar, who devoted his life to the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, held various positions within ANAS, including junior researcher, academic secretary, senior researcher, and head of department at the Institute of Literature named after Nizami. From 1971 to 1987, he served as Director of the Nizami Museum of Literature; from 1987 to 2001, he was the academic secretary of the Department of Literature, Language, and Art; and from 2002 until the end of his life, he held the position of Director of the Institute of Literature named after Nizami.
“Alongside his fruitful scholarly and organizational activities, academician Bakir Nabiyev also devoted great effort to the training of highly qualified specialists,” stated the head of ANAS, emphasizing that under his supervision many PhD and doctoral dissertations were completed, and that he established a distinguished scientific school in Azerbaijani philology.
Academician Isa Habibbayli noted that the present ceremony was held within the framework of the 80th anniversary celebrations of ANAS. He underlined that Bakir Nabiyev, who dedicated his entire meaningful life to the advancement of literary scholarship and the development of cultural thought, is one of Azerbaijan’s eminent scholars whose legacy will continue to serve as an example for future generations.
The head of ANAS further emphasized that the rich scholarly activity of the distinguished literary critic was always highly appreciated by the Azerbaijani state, recalling that he had been awarded the honorary title of “Honored Scientist,” the “Glory” and “Independence” orders, as well as the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Professor Hayrettin Ivgin, Chairman of the Board of the World Academy of Words, then delivered a speech in which he shared his memories of academician Bakir Nabiyev, highlighting his noble moral qualities, benevolent deeds, and profound patriotism. Speaking about Nabiyev’s work in the field of Azerbaijani literary historiography, Hayrettin Ivgin emphasized that he was among those scholars who immortalized their names in Azerbaijani literary studies and in the cultural history of the Turkic peoples through their scholarly works.
He noted that Bakir Nabiyev consistently based his research on a wide range of historical sources and academic references. Ivgin stressed that Nabiyev’s meaningful life and his rich scholarly and literary legacy represent an exemplary school for future generations.
