On January 7, a meeting dedicated to the calls made by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, during his interview with local television channels regarding the protection of the purity of the Azerbaijani language was held at the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).
The event, chaired by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, was attended by heads of departments of the Presidium’s administrative apparatus, scientific secretaries, as well as representatives of scientific institutions and organizations working in this field.
During the meeting, the tasks arising from the statements made by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, in his interview with local television channels regarding the protection of the purity of the Azerbaijani language were discussed.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that National Leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev have always treated the protection of the Azerbaijani language and its purity as a matter of state policy. He emphasized that this practical approach has played an important role in protecting the language from external threats in today’s globalized world. Stating that a number of official documents have been signed in this direction over the years, Academician Isa Habibbeyli also pointed out that special attention has been paid to this issue in President Ilham Aliyev’s speeches. It was noted that in his speech at the meeting dedicated to the 80th anniversary of ANAS, President Ilham Aliyev set important tasks for scholars regarding the Azerbaijani language, and based on these tasks, a meeting with linguists was immediately held at the Presidium of ANAS, relevant decisions were adopted, instructions were given, and practical steps were taken.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli stated that the head of state’s latest call during his interview with local television channels regarding the protection of the purity of the Azerbaijani language has once again set important tasks for scholars and emphasized that language-related issues are among the main priority areas of ANAS. In his speech, the head of the Academy considered it appropriate to establish a “Modern Azerbaijani Language and Speech Culture” department on the basis of the existing “Modern Azerbaijani Language” department at the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of ANAS, using available staff positions and internal resources.
Speaking at the meeting, the Director of the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of ANAS, Professor Nadir Mammadli, provided detailed information about the work carried out at the institution regarding the Azerbaijani language. He noted that in accordance with the requirements set by the head of state concerning the protection of the purity of the Azerbaijani language, scientific teams face important tasks in enriching the language through its internal resources, ensuring its security, preventing various types of threats to it, and regulating processes taking place in the internet environment. It was reported that the “Orthographic Dictionary of the Azerbaijani Language” and the “Orthoepic Dictionary of the Azerbaijani Language” are currently being prepared at the Institute of Linguistics, and that a national language corpus is also being created. Professor Nadir Mammadli also provided information on a number of publications released in this field. He noted that volumes on the lexicon, phonetics, and morphology of the Azerbaijani language have already been published at the Institute of Linguistics, and that the fourth volume, Syntax, is nearing completion.
The meeting also featured speeches by the Head of the Science and Education Department of the Presidium’s administrative apparatus of ANAS, Doctor of Philological Sciences Serkhan Khavari; the Scientific Secretary of the Humanities Division of ANAS, PhD in Philology Arzu Mammadkhanli; and the Director of the Central Scientific Library of ANAS, Doctor of Technical Sciences Huseyn Huseynov. The speeches addressed issues such as enriching the language through its internal resources, conducting research, writing works that reflect civic attitudes toward the protection of the mother tongue, and safeguarding the language from external influences, and proposals were put forward.
In conclusion, Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized the importance of further expanding Azerbaijani language research in various directions, presenting the obtained scientific results to the wider scientific community at the level of monographs, and publishing and distributing small educational brochures. He noted that it was decided to organize Olympiads in secondary schools jointly by the Institute of Linguistics, the scientific divisions of ANAS, and the ANAS Young Academy. Academician Isa Habibbeyli also drew attention to his instructions regarding the organization of a permanent book exhibition on the Azerbaijani language at the Central Scientific Library of ANAS, including a virtual exhibition.
He also stated that discussions dedicated to the protection of the purity of the Azerbaijani language will be held in the near future jointly organized by ANAS and the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union.
