Vusala Mahirghizi, Director General of APA Media Group and Chair of the Language Commission of the Azerbaijan Press Council, delivered a speech at the conference titled “The Language of the Media in the Framework of Scientific Discussion,” held at the Central Scientific Library and jointly organized by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Press Council.
She stated that the Azerbaijani language is not only a means of communication but also a model of national thinking. She noted that it is no coincidence that President Ilham Aliyev, in his speeches and interviews, has described the Azerbaijani language as a key attribute of our national identity and statehood, emphasizing the importance of preserving its purity and clearly expressing his opposition to the uncontrolled influx of foreign words into the language.
Vusala Mahirghizi pointed out that the primary responsibility in this direction lies with linguists, adding that the creation of new words, the formation of terminology, and their presentation for discussion are the direct responsibility of specialists. At the same time, media representatives must cooperate continuously and systematically with linguists and engage in joint efforts to protect and develop the language.
The speaker noted that orthographic, orthoepic, lexical, and terminological dictionaries of the Azerbaijani language have been prepared by ANAS. She emphasized the importance of digitizing these dictionaries for both the media and the wider public, as well as using digital and artificial intelligence technologies in this process. She particularly stressed the significance of digitizing orthoepic dictionaries, that is, resources ensuring the correct pronunciation of words.
She added that online media outlets currently make extensive use of tools that check the correct spelling of Azerbaijani words: “The most effective support tool is the verification of news texts by ICT tools within a few seconds. However, at present, these tools do not meet the requirements of the modern era and do not take into account updated language rules.”
Vusala Mahirghizi stated that in this regard, the activities of the Institute of Linguistics of ANAS will contribute to the swift elimination of problems hindering the development of the Azerbaijani language and ensure a faster and more effective process of protecting the language from foreign influences.
