On May 27, Ganja Branch of ANAS celebrated 100th anniversary of notable scientist and social-political figure, Academician Veli Akhundov

Event, bringing together representatives of Ganja city Health Department and Ganja Branch, was listened lecture by Academician-Secretary of the Branch, Academician Fuad Aliyev on life and scientific-social activity of Veli Akhundov, who had great merits in development of Azerbaijan science and social-political life of the country.

Noting that the conference was organized in accordance with the Decree of the President Ilham Aliyev "On the 100th anniversary of Veli Yusif oglu Akhundov," dated January 15, 2016, Academician Aliyev said that a prominent scientist conquered great heights in the Azerbaijani statehood and science. Scientist working at the post of Vice-President of ANAS was invested great effort in the training of scientific personnel. Under his leadership, a lot of doctoral and PhD theses have been defended.

Then, researcher of the Branch Elnur Hasanov spoke about the life and work of V.Akhundov. It was noted that Veli Akhundov was born on May 14, 1916 in the village of Saray, Baku city. In 1935 he graduated from the Azerbaijan Industrial College, and in 1941 - Azerbaijan Medical Institute. In 1941-1945, hee took part in World War II as a military doctor. After demobilization from the army he worked at the Research Institute of Virology, microbiology and hygiene, led by the Institute and the Ministry of Health. In 1958 he was the chairman of the Azerbaijan SSR Council of Ministers, and in the years 1959-1969 - the first secretary of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. Simultaneously Veli Akhundov was a member of the Transcaucasian Bureau of the CPSU Central Committee. In 1969 he was elected Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences, and in 1972 was appointed director of the Institute of Virology, Microbiology and Hygiene.

At the event, Deputy Head of Ganja City Health Department Akif Zarbaliyev spoke about the successes of Academician V.Akhundov achieved in public affairs and science.

Then it was listened the report by PhD in Education Alamzar Tagiyeva " Veli Akhundov sample for state management”.She described Veli Akhundov as a public figure, working in various senior positions for many years, and a scientist who has made important contributions to the country's health sector.
