Gurban Yetirmishli: "The location of the earthquake epicenter in great depth prevented serious damage"

On August 1, in the territory of Imishli region has been three earthquakes. Magnitude of the first quake, which occurred at 08:46 local time, 34 kilometers north-east of Beylagan, was 5.6 points. In the nearby cities as well as in the northern and north-western regions were felt tremors force 5.0 points. Three minutes later there was a second earthquake measuring 3.9 points. The magnitude of the third quake, which occurred at 11:51 local time, was 4.1 points. Despite this there is no reason for concern as the population of Imishli region and surrounding areas.

This was announced by General Director of the Republican Center of Seismic Survey (RCSS) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Gurban Yetirmishli.

Noting that all the energy came as a result of what happened in the morning of the main quake, G.Yetirmishli added: "After the first tremor 6 aftershocks were recorded. Weak aftershocks continued throughout the day.”

Stressing that serious damage is not expected, CEO RCSS completed his thought: "In the old buildings there is a probability of occurrence of cracks. The deep location of the earthquake epicenter prevented serious damage. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers. Therefore, the results have been negligible. If the depth of aftershocks was about 6-7 kilometers, it would be a lot of destruction. In this case, the adjacent areas have felt an earthquake measuring 7 points".
