Winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine announced

The Nobel Prize 2013 in Physiology and Medicine was awarded to scientists from the United States, James Rothman (Yale University), Randy Shekmanu (Berkeley) and the German Thomas Zyudof (Stanford University). Prize awarded for the discovery of the mechanism of regulation of cell-cell interactions.

According to the meddaily.ru, “Vesicular transport”, as studied by these researchers, allows the cells to exchange signals. Scientists have uncovered the mystery of how cells organize this transport system for the delivery of proteins and other substances. Each cell produces and exports molecules. They are transported inside the cell membrane in the form of vesicles - vesicles. Today's Nobel Laureates have identified and described the principles of operation of the system.

“Failures in the system have negative impacts and contribute to the creation of conditions for the development of neurological diseases, diabetes and immune disorders,” - said the Nobel Committee . In a press release, the committee notes that James Rothman and Thomas Zyudof studied the mechanisms of capture and movement of molecules within the cell vesicles and Randy Shekman was researching a set of genes required for vesicular traffic.

53 year-old James Rothman is a professor at Yale University. Randy Shekman was born in 1948, studied at California and Stanford universities. He is now a professor at UC Berkeley. Zyudof Thomas was born in 1955 in Gottingen. Since 2008 he is a professor of cell and molecular physiology at Stanford University.
