Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

As is known, in 2003, near of the Shikhmahmudlu village of Babek region was created the Botanical Garden of the Institute of Bioresources of ANAS Nakhchivan Division. This garden was included to the list of Azerbaijan museums by order of Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov.

An Experimental Garden wich area is 13.2 hectares and in accordance with the structure is divided into the experimental plots. In the botanical garden are study the characteristics of each plant, prepared distribution map, determined the way of protection.

There are planted and investigated more than 200 tree samples, shrubs, fruits, berries, grapes, ornamental plants, tropical and subtropical plants brought from different botanical and geographical areas of the world, including the flora of Azerbaijan.

From the fruit gardens of different districts and individual farms valuable varieties of fruit plants and established gene pool of fruit crops were delivered to the botanical garden. In the garden, along with local fruit crops of the autonomous republic, also established gene pool of vegetable and melon crops.

These samples are stored in the genebank of the Institute of Genetic Resources of ANAS. On the territory of the garden also operates collection of rare plants. There geofitnyh are grown 43 plants included in the Red Book of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Besides, the specific structure of 68 samples of the trees, bushes and ornamental plants brought from Botanical gardens of Georgia, Turkey and Russia is studied.
