A number of items found during archeological excavations in Tovuz

On June 2017, an expedition led by Deputy Director of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS, Doctor of History Najaf Museyibli conducted archaeological excavations at Tovuzchay graveyard, belonging to Khojali-Gedebey culture, on the left bank of Tovuz River.

Let’s note that, the monuments belong to the end of the Second Millennium and the beginning of the I millennium(the last Bronze - Early Iron Age).

The excavations included pottery, weapon samples, ornaments from local and Middle Eastern countries, along with human skeletons buried in graves. In one of the graves, the bronze belt found at the waist of a male skeleton and its iron belly should be especially emphasized. These findings indicate that the burial was a fighter with a high social status.

The excavations conducted at the Tovuzchay graveyard II is of great importance to study the burial ritual of the people of Khojali-Gedabek culture, ancient ancestors of the Azerbaijani people, pottery, metalworking and others.
