Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

On September 27, prominent Azerbaijani scientist and chemist, Corresponding Member of ANAS Tofik Alkhazov is the 85th anniversary.

Alkhazov Tofik Hasan oglu was born on September 27, 1932 in Baku. In 1955 he graduated from the specialty "engineer-technologist" of the Azerbaijan Institute of Industry.

In 1960 he received the PhD degree in Chemistry, in 1969 - Doctor of Chemical Sciences, in 1971 - Professor. In 1989 he was elected a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

In 1961-1962 he was on the posts of head of the Chemistry Sector of the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy Research Department, associate professor of the Department of Physical Chemistry (1962-1970), head of this department (1970-1998).

The main area of activity of T. Alkhazov's scientific works is oxidative heterogeneous catalysis. Under his leadership, for the first time in the USSR, using oxide catalysts containing molybdenum, methods for the development of a number of valuable organic substances, applied on an industrial scale, were obtained.

At the Laboratory of Problems of Environmental Catalysis, created under the leadership of T. Alkhazov was carried out works to clean and neutralize natural and industrial gases from compounds containing sulfur; the production of elemental sulfur; purification and neutralization of exhaust gases of carburetors of internal combustion and diesel engines from toxic compounds; oxidation of hydrosulfide to sulfuric acid at one stage with the participation of oxygen in the air; complete oxidation of hydrocarbon residues and carbon dioxide in industrial waste.

The results of the scientific research conducted under the guidance of the scientist were applied in the New Oil Refinery Baku, the Sumgait Synthetic Rubber Plant and Russian plants operating in the cities of Nizhny Novgorod, Almetyevsk, Redkino and Saratov.

He is the author of over 400 scientific papers, including 131 authorship certificates and 4 monographs.

T. Alkhazov took part in international and all-Union congresses and symposia.

He was awarded the Certificate of Honor of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan SSR. The results of scientific works of the scientist were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals of the All-Union Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy.
