ANAS Division of Earth Sciences held next meeting at ANAS main building on December 25.

Academician-secretary of the Department, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov informed about the agenda of the meeting. He said that, the annual report on the scientific and scientific-organizational activities of the Institute of Geography in 2017 will be listening at the meeting.

Then, Director of the Institute of Geography, academician Ramiz Mammadov  delivered the annual report of the structure headed by him. He brought to the attention that, this year in the Institute in accordance with the research plan was carried out work in 20 stages. It was reported that the studies were aimed at a comprehensive study of the patterns of nature development in Azerbaijan and the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea. The scientist noted that, 12 out of 17 performed works were fundamental, and 5 - applied nature. The works were devoted to the current state of water resources, climate changes, economic, geographical and demographic problems of the regions, study of tourism activities, the current state of the quality of life of the population of the republic, analysis of the names of geographical objects in Azerbaijan and other issues.

It was brought to the attention that, as a result of the research carried out in the Institute, two important results were achieved. For the first time, a comparative analysis of the map of landscapes that can be formed in the natural conditions of humidity in the territory of Azerbaijan, with digital maps existing at the present time was carried out. In addition, indices of the anthropogenic transformation of landscapes during the historical period were calculated. The criteria for characterizing cold air waves on the Absheron Peninsula have been developed for the first time, border indicators have been determined, synoptic processes have been studied that determine these waves, their repetition and stability.

R.Mammadov noted that, this year the Geography Institute signed a memorandum of understanding on scientific research with the Real Estate Cadaster of the State Property Committee and the Address Register Service. As a result, information was collected on the climatic conditions of the 51 administrative districts of the republic.

In the current year, the "Wiki" group started functioning in the institute. The group in the Azerbaijani section of "Wikipedia" as a whole loaded 7.234 articles of the geographical direction.

In conclusion, academicians Gatam Guliyev, Arif Ismailzadeh, Akper Feizullayev, correspondent member of ANAS Rauf Gardashov and others spoke on the topic.
