Heavy bereavement for scientific community of Azerbaijan

On December 27, a prominent scientist-archeologist, head of the Department of Archeology of the Ancient Epoch of Azerbaijan of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, corresponding member of ANAS, professor Ilyas Babayev died at the age of 82.

Ilyas Babayev was born on March 23, 1935 in Khanegah village, Guba district. In 1958 he graduated with honors from the Azerbaijan State University (modern BSU), started working at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. In 1959, being one of the first archeologists of Azerbaijan, he took part in field studies of the Gabala archaeological expedition under the leadership of Salekh Gaziyev.

In 1962, I.Babayev, who went to Leningrad (St. Petersburg) for post-graduate studies, began his research in connection with the thesis in the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Archeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, while studying the ancient Greek language from a well-known expert on ancient Greek language and culture, K. Kolobova. In 1965 he defended his thesis on the topic "Glyphic monuments of Azerbaijan dating back to the ancient times and the Middle Ages", and in 1983, his doctoral thesis - "Cities of Caucasian Albania. (IV century BC - III century AD). In 2007 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS.

Since 1987, the scientist was in charge of the Department of Archeology of the Ancient Period of Azerbaijan at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS. Archaeologists from South Korea, Germany and Georgia worked under the Gabala archaeological expedition, which had international status.

Ilyas Babayev was a famous expert on archeology of the ancient period of the Caucasus and Iran. He was the author of more than 270 scientific papers, made presentations at international congresses, symposia and conferences held in various cities around the world. The scientist was one of the authors of textbooks for secondary schools and universities, I-II volumes of the multi-volume "History of Azerbaijan", Volume I of the Azerbaijan Numismatics, the multi-volume "Azerbaijan Encyclopedia" and "Nakhchivan Encyclopedia".

Professor I. Babayev had many years of pedagogical activity. In various institutions of higher education he lectured on archeology, the history of the Ancient East, the history of the ancient world, the history of Azerbaijan, the history of Europe and America, class society and the creation of the state in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, topical problems of the history of the ancient world, the history of the primitive communal system, the culture of the ancient world , historical anthropology, world history of state and law, history of state and law of Azerbaijan, Roman law, Islamic law.

In 2001-2011 was a member of the Expert Council on the History of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 2008-2009. - an expert of the international organization INTAS on granting grants to studies in Belgium, since 2008 - member of the editorial board of the Azerbaijan encyclopedia, since 2010 - member of the editorial board of the history, philosophy and law series of the journal "Izvestiya ANAS", in 2011-2012. - Chairman of the Expert Council on Historical and Political Sciences of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, since 2013 - Member of the Council for the Defense of Dissertations at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS

Ilyas Babayev's memory will always live in the hearts of those who knew him.
