Academician Musa Aliyev 110

On April 11, 110th anniversary of the outstanding oil-scientist, academician Musa Aliyev will be completed.

Academician Musa Aliyev was born on April 11, 1908 in Shamakhi. In 1926, graduated from a high school of Physics and Mathematics (Ashgabat) and entered Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute (now Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University) Mining and Metallurgy faculty. In 1931 graduated from the institute.

He began his labor activity in 1927 as a timekeeper at Surakhani Exploitation Station. In 1929, at the invitation of Professor V. V.Bakachev, he was accepted as a laboratory assistant at the Institute of Paleontology, Historical Geology and USSR Geology. He is a wealthy paleontologist who has been using the school of V. V.Bakachev. In 1931, M. Aliyev entered the post graduate course of the institute and conducted scientific researches under the guidance of prominent scientists such as V.Bakachev, V.Pechelintsev, VP Renneren. He defended his PhD thesis in 1936 and in 1957 he defended his doctoral dissertations, and in 1957 he became a professor of science. In 1950 he was elected as a full member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

Academician Musa Aliyev worked from 1936 to 1939 as a docent and dean of the oil department at the Azerbaijan Industry Institute. He worked as the rector of Azerbaijan Industry Institute in 1939-1941. Academician Musa Aliyev was appointed chief of the Department of General Education at the USSR Ministry of Oil in 1941-1942, and also as a lecturer at the Department of Paleontology and Historical Geology of the Moscow Oil Institute.

Academician Musa Aliyev was a great science organizer. He was the President of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in 1950-1958. During his leadership in the Academy, he served in guiding the development of the Academy of Sciences, the creation of new research institutes, departments and departments, and the organization of the most promising areas of science.

Since 1958 the new period of scientific activity of M. Aliyev begins (Moscow city). At the suggestion of the President of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR A.Nesmanov, he was invited to the position of Deputy Director of Scientific Affairs at the Institute of Geology and Development of Fossil Fuels newly established in Moscow (1985) and worked at this institute till the end of his life.

Academician M. Aliyev is known not only as a prominent scientist inUSSR, but also in foreign countries. He has repeatedly represented his country in international geological congresses. Academician Musa Aliyev participated in the XX International Geological Congress in Mexico (1956), the XLV All-Union Congress of Agents in Madras (India), XXI International Geological Congress in Copenhagen (Denmark) (1960), II Congress of Arab Countries in Beirut (Lebanon) He was the participant of the Third Congress of the Arab countries (1963), the IV Congress of the Arab countries (1965) in Beirut (Lebanon), the VIII Oil Congress of Arab Countries in Algeria (1971), and the International symposium on Yura-Tabashir Borders in Bulgaria (1977).

Academician Musa Aliyev was sent to the Institute of Geology of the Hungarian People's Republic (Budapest) in 1964 as a Scientific Adviser.

Academician Musa Aliyev was a member of scientific and public organizations, including the Soviet-Indian Friendship Society, the Soviet Committee of the International Geological Society, the Chalk Stratigraphic Commission, the editorial board of the Ministry of Geology of the USSR and the technical department of the USSR Oil and Gas Production Industry.

Academician M. Aliyev was a great public figure. He was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and Azerbaijan, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Azerbaijan, chairman of the Azerbaijan Plan Committee, chairman of the Azerbaijani department of the All-Union "Bilik" Society, member of the Lenin Awards Committee, Member of Parliament, Vice-President of the Soviet-Pakistan Friendship Society.

Academician M. Aliyev's long-term scientific, organizational, pedagogical and social activity has been highly appreciated. He was awarded with orders "Lenin", "Red Labor Flag" (twice) and "Honor Badge" and several medals and honorary decrees. After the scientist's death - in 1989 he was awarded the State Prize Laureate (jointly with co-authors) for his monograph "Chalk fauna of Azerbaijan".

Under the leadership of academician Musa Aliyev more than 60 philosophy and doctors of sciences have been trained. He is the author of about 350 scientific works related to various problems of geology, paleontology and stratigraphy.

In 2008, 34th session of the UNESCO General Conference, decided to hold the 100th jubilee of M.Aliyev, and on 17 November 2009 its jubilee was held in Paris in UNESCO's solemn ceremony.

Academician Musa Aliyev died in Moscow in 1985 and was buried in Honorary Alley in Baku.

The memory of the great man, great personality, prominent scientist, talented educator, academician Musa Aliyev will always live in the hearts of those who know him.
