Complex archeological researches in the Neolithic monuments of Tovuz region continue

From early June 2018 Tovuz archaeological expedition continued research in the region.

Farhad Guliyev, head of the department of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS, for many years, attached great importance to the multidisciplinary research of early village-type archaeological complex in Goytapa and other Neolithic communities in Tovuz. Young masters of archeology and anthropology were also included in the expedition.

In the current season, the expedition carried out field research work to reveal earlier gilded horizons in the excavation sites of Goytapa in the previous years. As a result, large-scale buildings and numerous archeological materials were discovered in the ancient settlement.

In addition, with the direct involvement of experts from the Tokyo University of Japan and National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) of France, research was conducted to determine the nutritional status of the Neolithic population in the region. So, lipid analysis was conducted primarily in desert conditions to determine the traces of dairy products on ceramic products found in the Goytapa archaeological complex. The expedition managed to carry out isotope analyzes of the samples taken from the human bones of the Topdagdagan necropolis, belonging to the Neolithic graves of the ancient settlement of Menteshtepe, 4 km from the ancient settlement of Goytepe and the Bronze Age.

Dr. Yilmaz Selim Erdal, professor of the Anthropology faculty of the Hajettepe University, visited the country and studied the scientific research carried out in Goytepe during the expedition. In the course of the meeting the contours of the joint program on the organization of archeology and genetics research in the latest technology-specific laboratories of the latest technology in Turkey and Sweden for DNA analysis of skeletons of neolithic people found in Azerbaijan were determined. To determine the graves of the Neolithic inhabitants of Goytepe, decided to make geo-physical shooting over the hill during the excavation season of 2019.
