Notable Azerbaijani composer Arif Melikov is 85

On September 13 Notable composer of Azerbaijan, Head of the Composition Chair of the Baku Music Academy, People's Artist, laureate of the “Honor Badge” and “Istiglal” medals Academician Arif Melikov is 85.

Melikov Arif Jahangir oglu was born on September 13, 1933 in Baku. In 1960 he graduated from the composer class of Gar Garayev of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory named after U.Hajibeyli (now the Baku Musical Academy).

In the year of graduating from the conservatory, he started his career here, and today he is a professor and head of the Department of Composition of this institution. Speaking about the role of A.Melikov in the development of Azerbaijani musical art, it must also be said that, along with composer creativity, he also engages in pedagogical activity. Under his leadership, more than 80 composers and theorists have been trained.

In 1960 he graduated from the Azerbaijan State Conservatory after Uzeyir Hajibayli (present Baku Music Academy) in Gara Garayev composition class. From that time, he began his teaching activities and now works as a Professor of the organization and a director of the Composer's Chair.

Speaking about A.Melikov's role in development of the Azerbaijani musical art, it is necessary to tell also that along with composer creativity he is engaged also in pedagogical activity. Under his management more than 80 composers and theorists are trained.

By the nature of his work, Arif Melikov is a symphonist. His works have defined the main directions of the national symphonic music of the late XX - XXI centuries. Creativity of the composer is directed to individual creative style. In his works, a deep national origin is felt, that is, the organic connection of the modern principles of composer writing with the classical patterns of Azerbaijani music. Arif Melikov has fundamentally mastered the classical traditions of the musical art of the past and thoroughly studied all modern musical trends and trends. His works are put on the stages of Russia, the USA, Great Britain, France, Japan, Turkey, Brazil, and other countries of the world.

The ballet "The Legend of Love", written in 1961 based on the libretto of the Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet, brought the composer world fame. He is the author of the ballets "Stronger than Death", "Two on the Earth", "Ali Baba and 40 Thieves", "Dastan of Two Hearts", "Yusif and Zuleikha", ballads "Azerbaijan", operettas from three parts "Waves" and 8 symphonies . He composed music for the 30 Azerbaijani films. In 2016, the 28-volume volume by the composer "Work of Bulk of Sheet Music" was published.

In 1965 he was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Art of the Azerbaijan SSR, in 1971 the Order of the “Honor Badge”. He was awarded as People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1978, laureate of the State Award of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1986, People's Artist of the USSR in 1986, the “Istiglal” Order in 1998, “Heydar Aliyev” Order in 2013, Gold Medal after “Nizami Ganjavi” of the Republic of Azerbaijan, etc.
