ANAS Main Building held a conference “Azykh Cave and streams of migration in Azerbaijan”, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of part of the jaw bone of a primitive man of the family of early hominids - Azykhantrop on October 1. The forum brought together about 20 famous scientists in the field of studying the Paleolithic period from England, Russia, Georgia and Ukraine.
First, participants with deep respect honored the memory of the national leader of our people Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honors and the outstanding ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva and laid flowers to their graves.
The event began with the sound of the national anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
ANAS Vice-President, academician Isa Habibbeyli opened the conference noted that, Azerbaijanis are representatives of one of the most ancient peoples on the planet and the proof of this is the presence of Azykhantrop in Azykh cave in 1968 by Azerbaijani archaeologist Mammadali Huseynov. In the course of the work, it turned out that Azykhontrop (this was the name of this person) lived here 350-400 thousand years ago, and the jaw belongs to a representative of these people, aged 18-22 years. At the moment, the find is kept in the National Museum of the History of Azerbaijan.
Noting the presence of a large number of material and cultural samples in this multi-layered Paleolithic monument, academician said that, as a result, not only archaeologists are working here, but also specialists from other scientific fields, such as paleontologists, paleogeologists, paleoanthropologists, etc.

The distribution area of the Guruchay culture (Azykh cave was introduced into science) covers the areas of Nakhchivan, Mingachevir and Gabala.
Vice-President of ANAS stressed that, since 1993, the territory where the Azykh cave is located under the Armenian occupation and there are regularly conducted illegal research.
Academician-secretary of the Department of Social Sciences of the ANAS, academician Nargiz Akhundova said that, primitive people were also found here, including samples of their religious beliefs. N.Akhundova stressed that, the results of the Azykh expedition coincided with the period of the USSR, as a result of which its significance and scale did not reach the world community at the proper level.
Noting the political importance of this conference, the academician said that, the forum would also play a role in establishing the truth in response to the distorted information related to the Azykh Cave, promoted by Armenians.
Director of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Maisa Ragimova, director of the National Museum of Azerbaijan History, academician Naila Velikhanli and academician Teymur Bunyadov also noted the significance of this forum and the Azykh Cave, as well as samples found here. Thousands of material and cultural specimens and the remains found in the cave are kept in the National Museum of Azerbaijan History are the Azykh collection.
