ANAS strengthens scientific ties with the United Nations

A meeting with the delegation headed by Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in the Republic of Azerbaijan and resident representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Gulam Ishaqzai was held at the Presidium of ANAS.

During the meeting, two sides discussed new cooperation opportunities, including the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the prospects of joint cooperation in solving environmental problems.

Academician Akif Alizadeh, President of ANAS, welcomed the guests and expressed his pleasure to see representatives of the United Nations in his scientific institution.

The scientist informed about the XIII Pomegranate Festival in Goychay on November 3 and 4, as well as the researches carried out in the direction of studying the pomegranate plant.

Head of ANAS noted that the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, undertook complex measures to develop the agrarian sector in Azerbaijan and supported the development of this sphere with important decrees and orders. Academician also added that the Academy actively participates in the implementation of the tasks set by the Head of State in the agrarian sphere, and successfully accomplishes various projects.

The academician emphasized the importance of the development of relevant sciences in Azerbaijan by making effective use of the opportunities created by the UN and emphasized the importance of joint cooperation in this area. He noted that the active participation of scientists and specialists of ANAS in the grant projects organized by the UN will also stimulate the integration of our country into the international arena.

He also informed about the Analytical Center, which was set up at the academy. According to the scientist, the Center will cover many areas of science as well as government agencies. Presently, the Azerbaijani-UN relations are at a new stage, the scientist pointed out to the rapid development of the Analytical Center with the help of this authoritative body.

Then the head of ANAS spoke about the Convention signed by the Caspian states on the legal status of the Caspian Sea. He said that the main purpose of the project is to improve the capacities of the sea, the ecological changes occurring there, the anthropogenic effects, and so on.

Today, special attention is paid to the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in both state and scientific institutions in Azerbaijan, the scientist added.

Academician A.Alizadeh noted that the protection of the environment and biodiversity, the development of high technologies constitute priority directions in ANAS. He proposed representatives of the United Nations to closely familiarize with the various institutions and organizations of the organization headed by him, and then to identify concrete cooperation opportunities and sign a memorandum of understanding.

UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Gulam Ishaqzai said that a number of projects have been successfully implemented with his organization. He particularly underlined the UN's comprehensive support for the implementation of such innovative projects.

Ishaqzai said that the National Coordinating Council for Sustainable Development of Azerbaijan was set up by President Ilham Aliyev's Decree of October 6, 2016. He said that the Government of Azerbaijan has mobilized all its forces to implement the tasks arising from the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ali Ahmedov, has been appointed Chairman of the National Coordinating Council. He pointed out that the National Coordination Council has implemented a number of important measures within a short period of time. Speaking about joining the project in 2015, the guest said that he would continue until 2030.

Academician-secretary of ANAS, Director of the Institute of Information Technology, academician Rasim Alguliev spoke about the scientific researches carried out in different directions of information technology and information society problems in his organization. Institute conducts researches in information security, biometric technologies, economy of information and knowledge, software engineering, e-government formation, e-education and etc. the speaker underlined.

Academician G. Ishaqzai invited the delegation to get acquainted with the institute and its main activities.

Academician-Secretary of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, academician Ahliman Amiraslanov highly appreciated the development of scientific relations with the UN, expressing confidence that this cooperation will contribute significantly to the future activities of the Institute of Genetic Resources, Botany, Molecular Billiards and Biotechnology.

Director of the Institute of Genetic Resources, correspondent member of ANAS Zeynal Akperov highlighted the importance of implementation of global scientific projects with the UN. He talked about the importance of cooperation in physiological, chemical, biodiversity, agrarian, food security and other areas.

At the meeting, discussions were also held on the environment, sustainable development and other issues, and suggested a number of proposals to strengthen scientific ties.
