Russian Nobel Prize Winner for Physics Alferov dies at 88

Zhores Alferov, the 2000 Nobel Prize winner in physics and a member of Russia's parliament, has died at 88 in St. Petersburg.

An outstanding scientist, a renowned expert in the field of semiconductor physics and quantum electronics, Zhores Alferov was Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences from April 25, 1990. In 1972, the scientist was elected as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and since 1979 he has been an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Winner of the Lenin Prize (1972), State Prize of the USSR (1984), State Prize of the Russian Federation (2001). Laureat of “Order of National Merit“. Winner of the Global Energy Prize (2005), Prize of RAN after A.F.Ioffe (1996).

Zhores Alferov was one of the outstanding Russian scientists in the field of physics and technology of semiconductors, his work received wide acclaim and world recognition, highlighted in textbooks. Author of over 500 scientific papers, including 3 monographs, more than 50 inventions. In 2004, J.Alferov was elected as an honorary member of ANAS.
