The main activity of the Institute of History is the “Common concept of the Azerbaijan History”. This activity covers 4 problems named as “Summarized Researches on Azerbaijan History”, “Historiography and Source Study”, “Political History of Azerbaijan”, “The Social and Economic History of Azerbaijan” and 26 topics. 

The research activities of the Institute of History are in the spotlight of the leadership of the country. The fundamental scientific works published by the Institute were highly appreciated by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Excellency Ilham Aliyev at the annual meeting of ANAS on 26 April 2011 as a response to his call.

Noting, in particular, the self-sacrificing efforts of the scientists of the Institute of History of ANAS, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev also highly appreciated their works on presenting the historical realities of the history of Azerbaijan to the world community.

In 2013, the basis of the research activities of the Institute of History consisted of decree signed on 26 April 2012 by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on strengthening of the material-technical base of A.A. Bakikhanov Institute of History of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The research activities of the Institute of History are carried out under instructions, decree and recommendations of the Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev.

The Institute of History prepared and published the collection of documents of two volumes called “Heydar Aliyev: On the Guard of Azerbaijan Science” dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev a short period of time under the decree of the President of Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on 21 January 2013 on celebration of the 90th anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. As a continuation of the work, the Institute of History completed and submitted for publication the scientific edition of fundamental monographs “Heydar Aliyev” of two volumes devoted to the life and activity of the National Leader and the work was published in 2013. 

On 17 April 2013, the Corresponding Member of the ANAS Yagub Mahmudov’s book “The Victory March of Heydar Aliyev's ideas”, translated into Ukrainian was presented in Kiev, the capital of the Republic of the Ukraine. The ambassador of Azerbaijan to Ukraine Eynulla Madatly, and the chairman of the Congress of the Ukrainian Azerbaijanis Rovshan Taghiyev took part in the event. The author of the book, director of the Institute of History of ANAS, Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov made ​​a speech “Heydar Aliyev, the founder of new Azerbaijan”.

In addition to the publications, a documentary film “The Genius Azerbaijani” devoted to the 90th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev was shot with participation of the director of the Institute of History and the Corresponding Member of ANAS Y.M. Mahmudov. The scenario author and the director was Yagub Mahmudov, the director of the Institute of History and the Corresponding Member of ANAS.

In addition, the director of the Institute of History and the Corresponding Member of ANAS Y.M. Mahmudov, the deputy director for Scientific Affairs, PhD J.A. Bahramov, the head of the department “Aliyev Study”, Doctor on History A.G. Gasimov, various government agencies of the republic participated at the scientific-practical conferences held in regard with the 90th anniversary of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev.

The information portal of the Institute of History of ANAS is regularly enriched with new information in connection with the execution of the order on the declaration of 2013 year as “the year of Information Communication Technology” in Azerbaijan by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In January 2013, in response to the request of the Executive Committee of Gubadly region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Institute of History published copies of the monograph “Gubadly: the ancient Azerbaijani land Zangazur’s gateway” (424 pages) devoted to the 20th anniversary of the occupation of the region by Armenia and common content of that monograph in the Russian (125 pages) and English (120 pages) languages.  The employees of the Institute who are the authors of monographs took part in the republican scientific-practical conference held for this purpose on 30 August 2013.

During the reporting year, the Institute employees conducted research in the basic scientific activity on “Common Concept of the History of Azerbaijan”. This activity covers 4 problems named as “Summarized Researches on Azerbaijan History”, “Historiography and Source Study”, “Political History of Azerbaijan”, “The Social and Economic History of Azerbaijan” and 26 topics. All topics are challenging. 15 out of 26 topics were completed. The completed topics were submitted to the publication to be published as a book and some of them have already been published.

In 2013, 24 books were published at the Institute. Besides, more than 125 articles of the Institute employees’ were published in prestigious scientific journals (including about 50 in abroad).

Bringing the numerous archival materials and official government documents held in different countries around the world to the country for opening purposefully forgotten pages of the country’s history at the Institute of History, delivering the history of the lost territories to the present and future generations by investigating it, paves the way for the expansion and strengthening scientific relations of the Institute and the development of the history of Azerbaijan.

During the reporting year, the project of bringing the documents related to the history of Azerbaijan from the archives of the individual countries was continued, the scientific trips were organized to the cities such as Paris, London, Berlin, New Delhi, Moscow, St.Petersburg, Istanbul, Ankara, Astrakhan and Tbilisi. A significant portion of the documents brought to the Institute was prepared for the publication and 24 of the collection of documents were published as a book.

On 29 March, the Institute of History of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences together with the Executive Power of Guba city held International Scientific Conference on “the Genocide against the Azerbaijani People between 1918 and 1920” at the Heydar Aliyev Center. The well-known historians from Turkey, Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia and Iran participated in the conference.

For their services in the investigation of the history of Azerbaijan, Professor Dr. Rudolf Kunz (Germany) and Dr. M. Salmasizadeh (Iran) were awarded the Honorary Doctor of History at the conference.

On 7 and 8 May, Republican scientific-practical conference on the topic "Shaki is a museum in itself" dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev at Shaki City Executive Power. Employees of the Institute of History such as Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs PhD T.H.Najafli, the directors of departments Doctor on History A.G. Gasimov, G.A. Hajiyev, head of the sections Sh.F.Farzaliyev, PhD Kh.S. Gasimov and PhD I.Z.Aliyev took an active part at the conference under the leadership of the Corresponding Member of the Institute of History of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov.

On 24 May 2013, A.A. Bakikhanov Institute of History held the International scientific -practical conference dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in Baku city. Historians from Turkey, Georgia, Uzbekistan took part at  the conference. Making speech on “Azerbaijan Democratic Republic is the first democratic republic in the East”the Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov emphasized that the Republic day is not only pride of Azerbaijan but whole Eastern countries, and paid attention to the history of creation of PRA.

On 15 June 2013, the A.A. Bakikhanov Institute of History of ANAS presented documentary film “The Scientific-Practical Conference dedicated to the Day of National Salvation” and “The Genius Azerbaijani” at Heydar Aliyev Center in Surakhany together with Executive Power of Surakhany district. The Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov made ​​a speech on the topic “Heydar Aliyev is the winner of the Liberation struggle of the Azerbaijani people”at the conference.

On 6 and 7 December 2013, the International Scientific Conference on “the Caucasian Wars at the beginning of the nineteenth century and their consequences” was held under the organization of the A.A. Bakikhanov Institute of History of ANAS and “Azerbaijan Historical Society” Public Union in Baku.

Around 80 scholars from 8 countries - Azerbaijan, Turkey, Russia, the Ukraine, Georgia, the USA, Iran and Albania participated at the conference. Conference was continued in four-section called as “Caucasus within the XVIII-XIX century”, “the Russian-Azerbaijani Khanates in the Caucasus, the conflict between Russia and the Qajar, the conflict between Russia and theOttoman Empire”, “The results of the Caucasian wars for the Caucasus people”, “Agriculture, Trade, Architecture and Culture in Azerbaijan in the XVIII-XX centuries”.

On 5 April 2013, the employees of the A.A. Bakikhanov Institute of History and the Ataturk Research Center of Ataturk Culture, Language and History High Society of Turkey Prime Ministry (Türkiyə Başbakanlıq Atatürk Kültür Dil və Tarix Yüksək Qurumu Atatürk Araşdırma Mərkəzi) held meeting and  Scientific Cooperation Protocol was signed between these two organizations on scientific, cultural and various relations. The document was signed by the director of Institute of History, the Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov and the Chairman of the Ataturk Research Center Mehmet Ali Beyhan.

On 13-20 April 2013, during his visit to the country, the head of the Italian publishing house “Sandro Teti Editore” Mr. Sandro Teti met with the director of the Institute of History and the Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov and as a result of negotiations, they signed the contract on translation of the monograph named “The Iravan Khanate: Russian occupation and settlement of the Armenians in the lands of Northern Azerbaijan” into the Italian language and its publication.

On 17 April 2013, the Corresponding Member of the ANAS Yagub Mahmudov’s book “The Victory March of Heydar Aliyev's ideas” translated into Ukrainian was presented in Kiev, the capital of the Republic of the Ukraine. On 5-9 June 2013, the employees of the Institute of History Doctor on History Irada Baghirova, PhD Nigar Maxwell, PhD Sevinj Aliyeva, PhD Ilgar Niftaliyev, PhD Nigar Gozalova and PhD Shamil Rahmanzadeh made speeches at the International Scientific Conference on “

The Caucasus and the decline of the Empire: nationalism, ethnoses and national reconstruction

” organized by the Center for Strategic Studies of the Caucasus and The Garabagh Foundation” acting in the USA held in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The enlarged Academic Council of the Institute of History was held on 19 June. The Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov introduced at his speech the historian, professor Johannes Rau, who came from Germany, to the participants at the Academic Council. I. Rau who loves Azerbaijan, who cares about the troubles that Azerbaijan faced, and who made great efforts to deliver Azerbaijani realities to the world community, is the author of the valuable researches related with the history of Azerbaijan such as “The Founder: Heydar Aliyev as a personality and a statesman”, “Islam and Democracy. First attempt: Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-1920)”, “Daghlig Garabagh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan”. The Academic Council decided that the works of the eminent GermanhistorianI. Rau shall be translated into Azerbaijani and other languages.

Professor Dr. Johannes Rau made ​​two speeches at the ceremony. At the end of the event, Professor Dr. Johannes Rau was awarded the Honorary Doctor Diploma of the Institute of History for his services in the study of the history of Azerbaijan.

On 22-25 October 2013, a group of employees of the Institute headed by the Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov was invited to the International Symposium on  the “90th year of the Establishment of the Republic of Turkey” organized by Turkey Ataturk Research Center, the Governor of Eskishehir and Eskishehir University of Osmangazi in Eskishehir city of Turkey. A separate section of the symposium was devoted to the Azerbaijani-Turkish relations. The Corresponding Member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov made a very interesting and meaningful speech on “the Period of Ilham, the Founder of the History of Azerbaijan”. PhD. J. Bahramov, Doctor on History Professor T. Mustafazadeh, PhD I. Niftaliyev, PhD K.Ismayilov, PhD S.Aliyeva, PhD N. Mammadzadeh, PhD G.Najafli and PhD I. Mammadova made special speeches at the symposium.

The Corresponding Member of ANAS, the honored scientist Yagub Mahmudov was awarded with one more award of the international Socrates Committee. On 16-19 December 2013, the director of the Institute of History Yagub Mahmudov was awarded a diploma and a medal of “Queen Victoria” at the international conference dedicated to “Science and Education. New opportunities and activities” held in Oxford, UK. The international award “Queen Victoria” was presented to Professor Yagub Mahmudov for his role in maintenance of national values, for his highest valor and honesty.

On January 27, 2014, at A.A.Bakikhanov Institute of History was held scientific session devoted to the 130th anniversary of Mahammad Amin Rasulzadeh.

On February 24, 2014 at A.A.Bakikhanov Institute of History was held scientific session devoted to the 150th anniversary of Ali bey Huseynzadeh.

On March 27-29, 2014, on the invitation of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Republic of Turkey F.Baghirov Corresponding member of the ANAS Y.M.Mahmudov was in a scientific mission in Ankara and in Giziljahamam cities in order to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide and made speeches at the events held on this occasion.

On April 9, 2014, at A.A.Bakikhanov Institute of History of the ANAS was presented the book “The travels around the Caucasus” by Werner von Siemens.

On May 7, 2014, the special commemorative ceremony was held at the Institute of History in connection with the 91st year of birth of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

On June 6, 2014, was held scientific conference on the theme “Abbasgulu Agha Bakikhanov 220” in Guba town organized by the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences and the Executive Power of Guba District.

On June 19-21, 2014, was held international scientific conference “The First World War and Azerbaijan” organized by the Institute of History.

On July 8, 2014, was held scientific conference dedicated to the 220th anniversary of prominent writer, scientist and public figure Abbasgulu Agha Bakikhanov co-organized by Executive Power of Surakhani District of Baku and the Institute of History of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

On September 10, 2014, at an enlarged meeting of the Scientific Council of the Institute of History of ANAS, was held the discussion and presentation of academician Ramiz Mehdiyev’s book “"Dağlıq Qarabağ: məxəzlərdən oxunmuş tarix" (“Nagorno Karabakh: history read through sources” published in Moscow.

On September 19, 2014, , at an enlarged meeting of the Scientific Council of the Institute of History of ANAS, was held an event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the conclusion the “Contract of the Century”.

On September 25-27, 2014, in Erzurum of the Republic of Turkey was held International symposium “100. Yılı Münasebetiyle I Dünya Savaşında Kafkas (Doğu) Cephesi” dedicated to the First World War organized jointly by the “Republic of Turkey Ataturk Research Center of Turkey Prime Ministry Ataturk Culture, Language and History Society “, Erzurum Ataturk University and the Governor of Erzurum.

On October 28, 2014 in Bash Gounuk village of Sheki district was held by the Institute of History the presentation of the Institute employee, PhD in history A. Mammadov’s monograph “The Goynuk Movement“published by the decision of Scientific Council of the Institute of History.

On November 7, 2014 at A.A.Bakikhanov Institute of History of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences was held an event devoted to the “National Flag Dayof the Azerbaijan Republic”.

On February 21-23, 2015, director of the Institute, Corresponding member of the ANAS Y.M.Mahmudov and the leading scientific workers PhDs in history I.M.Mammadova and F.F.Ahmadova took part in the panel on the initiative of the society“Contemporary Nations and Communities” held in Ankara city of Turkish Republic and made speeches on the topic “Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev and Caucasian Islamic Army”.

On April 09-11, 2015 was held II International scientific conference dedicated to the “Genocide against the Azerbaijani and Turkish-Muslim population in Eastern Anatolia” (1914-1920-years) in Guba town, in “Heydar Aliyev Center” jointly organized by the Presidium of the ANAS, A.A.Bakikhanov Institute of History, the “Republic of Turkey Ataturk Research Center of Turkey Prime Ministry Ataturk Culture, Language and History Society “ and the Executive Power of Guba District.

On 22 April 2015, at Heydar Aliyev Center was held the scientific conference “Azerbaijan-Turkey brotherhood: Gallipoli – 100” co-organized by A.A.Bakikhanov Institute of History of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and Heydar Aliyev Center.

On 23-25 April, 2015 the director of the Institute, Corresponding member of the ANAS Y.M.Mahmudov and deputy director for scientific affairs, PhD J.A.Bahramov in the government delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister A.Ahmadov took part at the summit “Call for peace” held in Istanbul and made speeches on the topic “The 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli land and sea battle”.

On May 21-24, 2015 the director of the Institute, Corresponding member of the ANAS Y.M.Mahmudov, head of the “General History” department, Doctor of history, Prof. T.T.Mustafazadeh, employees of the department - leading scientific worker, PhD in history I.M.Mammadova, PhD in history M.Garibov, employee of the department “The historical demography”, senior resercher, PhD in history F.Aliyeva took part at the international scientific congress “The 100th anniversary of Çanakkale wars” held in Çanakkale town of the Republic of Turkey and made speeches there.

On 13-15 October 2015, the “VIII International Ataturk Congress” of world historians jointly organized by the Institute of History of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Ataturk Research Center of Turkey was held in Ganja.

On November 19, 2015, by the Institute of History of the ANAS and Western University of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan was held scientific conference “The Second World War and Azerbaijan”.

On November 26-28, 2015 in Izmir city of Turkey was held an international symposium ”The economic and social history of the Republic of Turkey” co-organized by the Ataturk Research Center (ATAM) and Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Ataturk's Principles and History of Revolution.

On April 7-10, 2016 in Shamakhy was held III International scientific conference “Genocide against the Azerbaijani and Turkish-Muslim population in Eastern Anatolia” (1914-1920-years) co-organized by the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Institute of History of the ANAS, Ataturk Research Center of Turkey and Executive Power of Shamakhy District.

On October 13, 2016, at Presidential Library was held the presentation of the two-volume edition “History of the Republic of Azerbaijan” consisting of five books published by the Institute of History of the ANAS.
