Tovuz Archaeological Expedition, headed by head of the Department of ANAS Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, PhD in History Farhad Guliyev conducted the archaeological work from May 31 to the second half of July in the late Neolithic settlement of Goytapa.
Archaeological research has been resumed in the ancient settlement of Kichiktapa 3 km east of Goytapa from July 7 to the end of July.
The main objective of the study of both monuments is the identification of climatic conditions at the beginning and end of the Neolithic period in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region as a whole, the impact of socio-economic life of the Neolithic period on the Caucasus region and factors associated with settlement. The existence of migration, the evolution of the human diet, the role of Neolithic societies in the western region of Azerbaijan, etc.
Experts in different fields: specialist in stone tools technology Laurence Astruc, paleobotanist Alexia Dexaic, topographer Emanuela Brunacci, anthropologist Modwene Poulmarc’h and archaeologist Emmanuel Baudouin were invited from the French National Center for Scientific Research to provide the archaeological aspect of the work.
To that end, archaeological excavations at the top of the Neolithic monument of Goytapa were continued. Archaeological excavations continued in the ancient settlement of Kichiktapa from the squares left over from the last time.
Archaeological research of both monuments will give us an idea of how the Middle East formed the period of the Late Neolithic and the Neolithic process in the region, as well as a wider picture of the life and production activities of people in the VI millennium BC.
