Lahij State Historical and Cultural Reserve started archaeological excavations

The State Agency for Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Shamakhi-Agsu-Ismayilli Archaeological Expedition of ANAS Institute of Archeology and Ethnography signed an agreement on scientific research and excavations in the Lahij State Historical and Cultural Reserve, as well as a detailed study of the sewage system of Lahij which is an indicator ancient city culture.

Initial studies includs determining the directions of future archaeological excavations in this area, studying the discovered samples of material and cultural heritage, developing the tourism sector and promoting the cultural heritage of this ancient Azerbaijani city.

Initially, archaeological research was carried out in the upper part of Lahij - on Agolu Street, as well as near the Agolu mosque (now the Lahij Museum of History and Local History) under the leadership of the expedition, PhD on History Akif Guliyev. Excavations on the upper cultural layer with a depth of 0.40-0.45 m were discovered fragments of ceramics dating back to the Middle Ages.

The second exploratory excavations were carried out at the Bazar Street entrance, in the territory where the administrative building of the Lahij State Historical and Cultural Reserve will be built in the future. Fragments of medieval glazed and unglazed faience and iron objects were found on the upper layer.

In addition, in the western part of the excavations was discovered a 2.2 m long stone structure.

With the direct participation of head of the Sector for the Implementation of Information Technologies in Archeology of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, archaeologist Fuad Huseynov and architect Muhammad Nurmamadov, during research at the excavation site at the depth of 0.5 m an ancient sewer line was discovered, i.e. traces of an ancient sewer network. The width of this line is 0.2 m, it extends to the south and connects to the main sewer line.

Further archaeological research will be carried out near the Aragid cemetery, Old Duluz quarter and near high school.
