Academician Adil Garibov turns 70

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding chemist, Honored Scientist, holder of the Order of Shohhrat, chairman of the National Center for Nuclear Research, academician Adil Garibov.

Adil Abdulkhalig oglu Garibov was born on March 28, 1950 in the city of Sheki. After graduating from high school with a silver medal in 1966, he entered the Chemistry Department of Azerbaijan State University, and in 1972 he graduated with honors with a degree in Physical Chemistry.

In the years 1972-1976, eceived postgraduate education in the Radiation Research Sector of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. In 1979, he defended his thesis on "The effect of gamma radiation on zeolites and zeolite-containing catalysts," and in 1995, his doctoral thesis on "Patterns of energy transfer in the processes of radiation-catalytic decomposition of substances on the surface of oxides and metal oxide systems." He received the title of professor in 1998, was elected a corresponding member of ANAS in 2007 and an active member in 2014.

Scientific research of academician A. Garibov is multifaceted. He studied at a scientific school at the Institute of Atomic Energy after I. Kurchatov, a leading scientific institution in the field of nuclear science and technology of the former USSR. Under the guidance of the scientist, a radiation method was developed to improve the quality of gasoline in the process of catalytic cracking of oil fractions based on nuclear energy. A. Garibov also determined the optimal regime of radiation-catalytic conversion of methane with water vapor. As a result of research, a method was developed for storing the energy of ionizing radiation in oxide dielectrics.

He experimentally discovered the effect of measuring radiation-inhomogeneous processes and developed the scientific basis for the efficient conversion of energy through hydrogen. In addition, a theoretical model of the processes of radiation-inhomogeneous energy conversion was proposed by the academician for the first time under the program of atomic-hydrogen energy, and kinetic parameters of the processes were determined.

After the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant A. Garibov conducted research on the safety of water-cooled nuclear reactors commissioned by the Institute of Atomic Energy named after I. Kurchatov and led cooperation in this direction. Based on the studies, the mechanisms of protection and catastrophic oxidation of materials of the core of water-cooled nuclear reactors were identified. The results were used to identify the causes of accidents at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and Fukushima, to develop scenarios for normal and emergency conditions of water-cooled nuclear reactors.

The scientist discovered the laws of nuclear transformation, radioactive decay, energy transfer and the formation of defects in nanomaterials under the influence of neutrons, protons and other ionizing radiation. Under his leadership, proposals were developed on the characteristics of the distribution of natural radioactive isotopes and radiation safety in land and water basins in Azerbaijan, in various industries.

The scientific results of A. Garibov were mentioned three times in the annual report of the USSR Academy of Sciences as important results. As a result of interdisciplinary research, the academician formed a scientific school on radiation-heterogeneous systems and processes in Azerbaijan.

He was appointed chairman of the National Center for Nuclear Research under the Ministry of Transport, Communication and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan by presidential decree of July 22, 2014.

Academician A. Garibov is the author of more than 400 scientific works, including 2 books, 12 patents and copyright certificates. More than 1,500 of his works have been cited in prestigious international scientific journals. Under his leadership, a number of projects were implemented with NATO, the Ukrainian Science and Technology Foundation, the European Union and the US Department of Energy.

The scientist is a representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Commission for the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a member of the State Commission for Relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The scientific and organizational activities of A. Garibov have always been highly appreciated by our state. By decree of the President in 2005, he was awarded the honorary title “Honored Worker of Science”, and in 2020, the Order of “Shohrat”.

We congratulate the outstanding scientist Adil Garibov on his 70th birthday and wish him robust health and new creative successes in scientific work.
