Corresponding member of ANAS Tofig Mammadov: "Many plant species in our flora are on the verge of extinction"

Currently, one in three species in the natural flora of Azerbaijan is in danger of extinction. The number of rare and endangered species of trees and shrubs in our country is about 200. This is about 43% of the trees and shrubs in the flora of Azerbaijan, was stated by the director of the Institute of Dendrology, corresponding member of ANAS Tofig Mammadov.

Observations show that some of the habitats of rare and endangered species of woody plants (trees and shrubs) in the flora of Azerbaijan do not have a protection strategy, he noted.

"One of the important issues is to determine the types of plants to be protected in our country, to prepare accurate lists, to identify the reasons for their belonging to rare plant categories," said the director of the institute.

He added that more than 800 plant species have medicinal effects in the flora of the country. More than 50 percent of the world's medicines are of plant origin. The collection, export and widespread use of various organs of this type of plant species in our country also leads to a gradual decline in the range of some rare plants.

According to the scientist, the widespread use of chemicals to clean the fields of weeds, in addition to destroying weeds, also ruins some of the trees and shrubs that grow in these areas.
