Identified the reason for the decrease in the water level in the Kura River

Director of the Institute of Geography, academician Ramiz Mammadov, Deputy Director for Science, Associate Professor Maharram Hasanov and head of the Department of Landscape Studies and Landscape Planning, associate professor Mirnuh Ismayilov visited Neftchala and Sabirabad regions.

The purpose was to study the recent water problem in the lower reaches of the Kura River, to investigate its causes and to develop recommendations.

Researchers have identified several reasons for the decline in river water and the flooding of seawater into the river valley. The first of these is the frequent change of bottom erosion in the downstream river due to the periodic rise and fall of the Caspian Sea level, and the fact that the bottom of the river valley falls below sea level. One of the main factors is the filling of the riverbed by the expulsion of sea water to the mouth of the Kura River and the reverse flow of the river bed under the influence of east, north-east and south-east winds, which are characteristic of the Neftchala shores of the Caspian Sea.
