Geographic scientist interviewed about mudflow hazard

PhD in Geography, Associate Professor Maharram Hasanov, Deputy Director for science at the Institute of Geography of ANAS, gave an online interview to the ARB 24 TV channel about possible mudflow and flood threats in Azerbaijan.

Providing general information about mudflows and floods and their causes, the climatologist noted that mudflows are among the unpredictable natural phenomena. He said that mudflows occur after heavy rains, as well as as a result of the rapid melting of snow in mountainous areas due to global warming.

According to him, 60 percent of our territory is mountainous, therefore in Azerbaijan there is a high probability of the emergence of mudflows: “Mudflows are formed mainly in late spring, early summer and late summer, early autumn on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, on the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, on the northern and eastern slopes of the Lesser Caucasus, on the northeastern slope of the Greater Caucasus.

deforestation, overloading of summer pastures and meadows lead to more frequent formation of mudflows.”
