From August 15 to September 14, the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan international archeological expedition continued archeological excavations at the Tepebashi monument in the village of Fazil, Sheki region, which began last year.
Along with the continuation of excavations in sites 1 and 2, research has begun in the new excavation site No. 4. The international expedition was led by the head of the Department of Ancient Archeology of Azerbaijan of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS, Ph.D. in History Zaur Hasanov, a well-known scientist from Kazakhstan, corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute, Professor Zeynolla Samashev.
Excavation No. 4, which began this year, has uncovered a unique find that is a novelty for the region. Thus, in the archeological excavations of 2020 of the Tepebashi monument, which has been researched since 1984 and is still known as a necropolis, farm buildings of the settlement were discovered for the first time.
As a result of excavations carried out this year in excavations 1 and 2, 4 graves dated back to different stages of the ancient period were discovered. Numerous artefacts from the tombs - pottery, bronze objects, iron weapons, etc. were found from graves.
The excavations were documented by drone aerial photography, and the materials obtained were preserved and restored on site and initially listed in the inventory.
Kazakh archaeologists have been unable to participate in archeological excavations in Sheki this year due to the current pandemic. Nevertheless, Azerbaijani and Kazakh archaeologists will work together in the scientific analysis of this year's excavations. Archaeological research will run in 2021.
