Notable Azerbaijan mathematician with “Shohrat” order, vice-president of ANAS, academician-secretary of ANAS Department of Physical-Mathematical and Technical Sciences acad. Akif Jafar oglu Hajiyev passed away on February 3, at 77 age of his life.

A.Hajiyev was born on December 8, 1937 in Baku in the family of a prominent researcher, scholar, literary critic, professor. Jafar Khandan. After graduating from high school he entered the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Azerbaijan State University (ASU), in 1960 he graduated from the University and joined the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. At the Institute A.Hajiyev served as a junior researcher, scientific secretary, senior researcher, head of department and director.

In 1964, at the Council on thesis Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Azerbaijan State University, he defended thesis the “Features approaching families of some operators.”

The results reached by A.Hajiyev in 1964-74 played an important role in creation of the direction of approach of unlimited continuous functions by linear positive operators in weight spaces. As the author of these achievements scientist took a worthy place among mathematicians of the world.

These results make a basis of his doctoral dissertation the “Studies of the theory of operators such as multi-dimensional coverage” defended at the Institute of Mathematics named after V.Steklov, Academy of Sciences of USSR in Moscow (1982).

In 1989, A.Hajiyev was elected a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

In 2001, A.Hajiyev was elected by active member of ANAS, in July of the same year he served as Academician-Secretary of the Department of Physical-Mathematical and Technical Sciences.

In 2002-2005 A.Hajiyev was the chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission in “Mathematics and Mechanics”, since 2005 was chairman of the Council for doctoral theses in mathematics and mechanics at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS.

Academician was the author of more than 100 scientific papers and monographs, under his leadership, were presented to the protection of 26 candidates and one doctoral dissertation.

In 2004, by decree of the President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev for the achievements in the development of Azerbaijani science, Academician A.Hajiyev was awarded by “Shohrat” order,in 2005 he was awarded by the honorary title “Honored Worker of Science.”

The memory of the famous scientist and responsive person Akif Hajiyev will always live in the hearts of those who knew him.
